Those wishing to combine cultural history with time outdoors in Råde will find several options in Karlshus: a local history museum with agricultural collections, a medieval church and trails in Karlshusskogen. In the wider Råde destination, the Råde Forsvarsmuseum offers another way to explore cultural history.

Cultural history in Karlshus

Råde Bygdetun is centrally located in the village centre of Karlshus. Its collection comprises more than 500 objects from local agriculture over the past hundred years. There is also a permanent exhibition of Anne Hissingby’s flax collection. The Bygdetun also includes Augebergstua, a farmhouse with an external gallery dating from around 1770. Together, agricultural everyday objects, flax and a historic building offer different ways to explore local history. Those interested in rural culture can consider these themes together.

Råde kirke, a stone church believed to date from the 12th century, stands east of Karlshus. It is situated on the Raet between Vansjø to the north and Skinnerflo to the south. The church offers views to the south and west. The church building thus combines medieval architectural history with a distinctive landscape setting; the directions also give a concrete sense of the surrounding area.

Råde Forsvarsmuseum is housed in Teltebua. The building was originally erected on the old parade ground near Sarpsborgveien 1 in the centre of Karlshus. The collection aims to provide insights into the history of Norwegian defence. Exhibitions, images and descriptions cover the situation during the 1940–1945 war and the involvement of people from the municipality. The museum therefore focuses on different subjects from the agricultural and craft themes of the Bygdetun.

Nature trails for different time commitments

For a short walk, Risseløypa is an option: this 1.3 km nature trail is in Karlshusskogen, is intended for families with children, and combines film and nature experiences. A longer option is the 5 km circular route ved Jonsten. It runs through Karlshusskogen along Vansjø, crosses flat terrain and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. The stated distances and approximate walking times make the difference in time commitment clear without equating the two trails.

The church can also be considered in its own landscape context: its location on the Raet between two bodies of water and its views to the south and west complement the walking route along Vansjø with a different perspective on the surroundings. When planning a stay, you can weigh up the shorter Risseløypa, the longer circular route and the cultural and historical sites as different options for individual time slots in your itinerary.

Special occasions and dates

The Bygdetun in Karlshus is permanently approved as a venue for weddings outside a church. Early contact with the parish office is recommended for planning. In Karlshus, the Råde Handelsstand also holds market days. If you plan to visit a market, check the current dates before your trip.

The wider Råde destination also includes the Råde parkfestival. It has been held annually in Karlshus since 2012, in calendar week 41. The festival includes the food festival “Smaken av Råde”, featuring local exhibitors on Saturday morning. Before your trip, check the current festival dates and programme if these events are important to your plans.

Plan your stay in Råde
