The stone rings at Lundeby are part of one of six burial grounds along the pilgrimage route through Råde. The largest ring has 13 upright stones. Råde Church also has a long history: the medieval stone church probably dates from the 12th century. The main image on its altarpiece was painted by Thomas Blix in 1725. Together, these places showcase very different historical artefacts—from stone rings to an 18th-century work of art.

Churches, Burial Grounds and Crafts

Another landmark in the history of architecture is Tomb Church, built in its present form in 1869. The Tomb estate is also home to the Galleri Gamle Tomb gallery. It is housed in a converted 19th-century granary and features art and crafts. Here, the building and its use come together: the former granary is itself part of the site’s history, while the gallery draws attention to artistic creativity.

In Karlshus, Råde Bygdetun preserves more than 500 objects from local agriculture over the past hundred years. A permanent exhibition also features Anne Hissingby’s flax collection and offers insight into the production of linen textiles. The Råde Defence Museum covers a different part of the past: its collection is devoted to the history of Norway’s defences and the involvement of the local population during the war from 1940 to 1945.

Coastal Spots and Remarkable Natural Features

Oven is a peninsula in Råde with dense woodland, rocky shores, pebble and sandy beaches, and trails. Storesand on Oven has a long sandy beach, a bathing platform, toilets, waste bins and play equipment. Saltholmen is in Saltnes, where you’ll find a small sandy beach, a bathing platform, toilets, waste bins and a large car park. Saltholmen is also home to two glacial potholes, each 160 to 180 centimetres in diameter. The beach and the geological feature give the place two distinct facets. As beach facilities may change, check the current details before your visit.

Routes and Outdoor Activities

The Kyststien coastal trail through Råde is about 32 kilometres long in total. It starts in the south at Saltnes, on the municipal boundary with Fredrikstad, and follows minor roads to Moss municipality. A much shorter route is Risseløypa, a 1.3-kilometre nature trail in Karlshusskogen for families with children.

The connections between the trails are also easy to follow: Varden-gapahuken is linked to Tombdalen by marked trails; from there, more trails lead to Rørfjell. A disc golf park opened at Tomb on 23 May 2023 in collaboration with Råde municipality. Canoes are available for hire by Vansjø, behind the upper secondary school. Check the latest details on use in advance.

Festivals and Practical Information

The Råde parkfestival has been held annually in Karlshus since 2012, during calendar week 41. The recurring festival also includes the food festival “Smaken av Råde”, held on Saturday morning with local exhibitors. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of the events, check the latest festival dates and programme in advance.

Another option for a visit is Bondegården in Råde, with farm visits and a café; it has animals and a play area. Trains on the Østfold Line stop regularly at Råde station. If you’re planning to travel by train, check the latest timetable before departure. This lets you take different interests into account when planning: from historical collections and churches to beaches, trails, events and outdoor activities.
