Fredrikstad combines fortress architecture, maritime culture and routes along the Glomma. Gamlebyen tells the story of the city as a fortress town, while Isegran offers a different way to explore history and boatbuilding. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether historic buildings, exploring the city independently, or river and island themes should take centre stage.
Fortress Town and Museum
Gamlebyen in Fredrikstad is one of the best-preserved fortress towns in Northern Europe. Kongsten Fort was built in 1685 and is considered one of Norwayâs best-preserved bastion fortresses. A covered passage that has survived to this day connects the fort to the main fortress, and visitors can follow it. The grounds of Kongsten Fort are open to visitors year-round and are suited to historical exploration, recreation and cultural events. Separate conditions may apply to indoor spaces and individual events.
The Fredrikstad Museum is located in TĂžihuset in Gamlebyen. Its offerings include three exhibitions, a small museum shop and the history bar âBar 1567.â In the old town, visitors can choose between exploring the fortress complex and visiting the museum as different ways to discover Fredrikstadâs history.
Isegran: Island Culture and Wooden Boats
The island of Isegran lies in central Fredrikstad, where the Glomma divides between Gamlebyen, the city centre, Cicignon and KrĂ„kerĂžy. It is easy to reach on foot, by ferry and by bicycle. On Isegran stands Isegranhuset, built in 1730 and also known as âDet Gule Husetâ and âEmpirehuset.â It is considered the oldest surviving wooden building in Ăstfold. HĂ„pets katedral on Isegran is an art and environmental project open to everyone.
The islandâs maritime side can also be seen at specific sites: Isegran has a museum harbour with traditional boats, as well as a maritime centre for building and restoring wooden boats. The stone tower, which is over 300 years old, has been converted into an observation tower. From there, you can see Fredrikstadbrua, Gamlebyen and the river as it runs towards the open sea via Lera. The themed trail following in Edvard Munchâs footsteps also begins on Isegran. It leads to six places in Fredrikstad with a special connection to Munch.
City Walk and River Landscape
âElvelangsâ is a self-guided city walk along the Glomma in central Fredrikstad. Its 16 stops and accompanying signs offer insights into the history, everyday life and architecture along the river. For exploring the city independently, the route brings these themes together in a single walk.
The Glommastien offers a different perspective on the landscape, running between Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg on both sides of the Glomma. The route passes through a cultural landscape worthy of preservation, with traces of the former sawmill and brick industries. There are several rest areas on both sides of the river, and distinctive posts and signs mark the route. This sets the Glommastien apart from Elvelangs, which focuses more on urban history and architecture.
BjĂžrnelĂžypa is an approximately one-kilometre circular trail that starts and ends at the second dam in Fredrikstadmarka. The walking trail has varied terrain and animal sculptures along the route. Its approximate length and circular layout offer a different way to find your bearings than the two riverside routes, without needing to estimate a walking time.
Getting There, Getting Around and Choosing a Hotel
Gamlebyen is centrally located in Fredrikstad and is easy to reach by bus, car, bicycle and on foot. Parking is available within the old town, but spaces are limited. Parking outside Gamlebyen, at Kongsten, is recommended as an alternative. Shops, galleries and a flea market offer small-scale shopping opportunities. If you want to shop at specific places, check current opening days and flea market dates, as individual offerings and schedules may change.
Transport and parking options can also change, so check the latest information before travelling. If you plan to reach Isegran by ferry, it is worth checking the current timetable. This will help you choose a hotel in Fredrikstad based on the experiences that matter most to you during your stay.
