Engelsviken brings together a guest harbor, coastal path, and fishing history in a coastal community on OnsĂžy, just north of HankĂž. If you are planning a stay, you can decide whether the harbor, a longer hike, or the maritime heritage will be your main focus. Local paths and sights offer different ways to explore the area.

Guest harbor and location

Engelsviken’s guest harbor is protected by a breakwater and accommodates boats up to 40 feet long. It operates as a self-service harbor; envelopes are available in a box on the breakwater. There is a fuel station in the harbor, north of the restaurant. These details give the harbor a practical role in getting oriented locally, as well as its waterfront location.

Coastal path and recreation areas

The coastal path runs south from Engelsviken. A circular hike can start in Engelsviken, go via FlÄtevika, and return to Engelsviken; it is about 10 to 15 kilometers long. Near Smausthavna, the path crosses rocks. The stated distance provides a framework for planning your day; also take your own walking pace into account when estimating the time. Parking is limited in Engelsviken.

Near Solviken, there is a campground with a kiosk, toilets, and waste bins. If you plan to use these facilities, check that they are available before your visit. There is also good parking in the Solviken area, with a short walk from the parking area to the recreation area. During the summer season, bathing water quality is checked there every two weeks. Solviken also offers a wheelchair-accessible ramp at the bathing jetty during this season.

The Solvika recreation area on EngelsvikĂžya has a child-friendly sandy beach and rocks; the coastal path passes by it. Solviken is signposted when you drive to Engelsviken via Fv 116 and then follow a local road. The two place names lead to different specific points of interest in the surrounding area: Solviken, with its facilities, and Solvika, with its beach, rocks, and coastal path.

Fishing, seafaring, and architecture

Engelsviken has a long tradition of fishing and seafaring. In the past, it was an important fishing harbor; processing was carried out, among other places, by Engelsviken Canning AS. Today, most processing takes place in Denmark and is managed from Engelsviken. The town’s history thus includes both its former importance as a fishing harbor and the present-day organization of processing.

The buildings also offer insights into cultural history. The old Bjelland factory, also known as the freezing house, is an example of functionalist architecture. The old Engelsviken school is an important, protected cultural heritage site. Alongside the history of fishing and seafaring, both represent other aspects of the local heritage.

Nearby, Teineholmen is an important part of the coastal cultural environment; the island was used to dry fishing pots. A salting station stood on Buholmen in Engelsviksundet during the major herring fishery before the turn of the century. The hut that gave it its name was demolished in 1899 and moved to Finnmark. Another historical event note: In summer 2019, the summer show featuring songs by Evert Taube was held for the 22nd time.

Getting there and wider cultural context

Taking the bus to Engelsviken is another option; there are frequent connections from Fredrikstad. Check the timetable before traveling, as services may change. Together with the limited parking available locally, this information can help you plan your journey according to your preferences.

Elsewhere in the wider destination of Fredrikstad, there are other cultural highlights. Kongsten Fort in Fredrikstad was built in 1685 as a bastion fort and is considered one of Norway’s best-preserved bastion forts. The Fredrikstad Museum is located in Tþihuset in the Old Town and has three exhibitions. These sites are part of the Fredrikstad area, not attractions in Engelsviken.
