In Ballstad, a still-active fishing village and a museum dedicated to Lofoten fishing come together. There are also activities from the harbor and various ways to explore the surrounding area on foot. This raises a practical question for planning your trip: would you like to spend more time at the harbor and exploring the history of fishing, or focus on walks and viewpoints?

Fishing Village and Fishing History

Ballstad is the largest fishing village in Lofoten that is still actively operating. The Ballstad Væreier Museum was established in 2024, following the extensive restoration of an old barn dating from 1881. The exhibition features old production equipment from the late 19th century, which was also used in Lofoten fishing. Fishing boats, photographs, films and other historical artifacts round out the collection.

The historical exhibits sit alongside a fishing industry that remains part of the character of the place. You can experience Lofoten fishing in Ballstad when the cod, known as skrei, heads out into the Vestfjord. This brings together a glimpse of earlier working methods and the local fishing context, without requiring any single activity to define your visit.

Activities from the Harbor

From the harbor, you can take part in kayaking, diving and snorkeling activities among the small skerries outside Ballstad. The first dive at the PADI 5-Star Dive Center reaches a maximum depth of six meters, and a qualified personal dive instructor accompanies the participant. The Discover Scuba program begins with a surface briefing, followed by simple exercises and a dive. As program formats and conditions can change, check the latest information before making plans.

During Summer Snorkeling, visitors can see kelp forests, seaweed areas, jellyfish, sea urchins and starfish, as well as various species of crabs and fish. Sea conditions and sightings vary. Boats for fishing trips also depart from Ballstad. The Havfisketur with Kaptein Storm provides, among other things, trolling lines, fishing rods and a Veritas-approved life jacket; facilities are available for gutting, filleting and packing the catch. Equipment and facilities may change, so it is worth checking before your trip.

Walking Paths, Steep Climbs and Views

Many small islands shelter Ballstad’s fishermen’s cabins and buildings from the open sea. The distinctive mountain Skottind dominates the view above the village. A hike to its summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. If you include the trails in your plans, there are also very different options: a Sherpa-built staircase leads up to Ballstadheia, and the route there is steep. Visitors who prefer to stay on flat ground can choose from several walking paths around the Ballstad headland.

You can therefore plan your hikes around different landscapes: a steep route to Ballstadheia, a summit hike on Skottind or walks along the flatter headland. The information does not promise a specific walking time; instead, it describes the destinations and the character of the routes. Check which type of outing suits your plans before scheduling your days.
