Klo offers visitors concrete opportunities for hiking, nature watching and exploring cultural heritage: the Coastal Trail between Langenes and Klo, cultural and historical traces, and several named bodies of water. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Klo, these themes can help shape your stay.
Hiking the Coastal Trail
The Coastal Trail runs from Langenes Church to Steinvatnet by Klo. The section between Langenes and Klo is 4.2 kilometres long. It is considered easy to manage and suitable for most people; a few small rocky knolls do not make the route more difficult. Parts of the Coastal Trail follow the old route between the villages, connecting the hike with the cultural landscape.
The Coastal Trail is also accessible in winter, as snow rarely stays near the sea. Conditions can vary, so take this into account when planning. There are good chances of spotting white-tailed eagles, otters and common seabirds along the trail. Sightings are not guaranteed, but wildlife is another aspect to look out for while hiking.
For geographical orientation: County Road 7678 runs for 1.453 kilometres from the junction north of Klo with Fv. 7668 to Klo.
Dronningruta and Klodalen
An unmarked turn-off from Dronningruta leads through Klodalen to Klo. In the wider travel destination of Ăksnes, Dronningruta is a marked hiking trail between the historic fishing villages of Nyksund and Stø. The circular route is about 15 kilometres long and takes 5 to 8 hours; a round trip via Klodalen can take up to 10 hours. Pay attention to the specific route when planning: the unmarked turn-off and the round trip via Klodalen should not be confused with the general route information.
There is no access to drinking water along Dronningruta. Bring enough to drink and, if possible, a packed lunch. The time estimates and food recommendations help you treat the hike as a distinct focus of your plans, rather than equating it with shorter trail sections.
Cultural heritage from prehistory to the Middle Ages
A small longhouse in Klo has a mill layer dated to around the time of Christ's birth. The cultural landscape of Gisløya, Strengelvüg and Klo also contains a great variety of traces dating from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, including an intact farmstead. The individual find in Klo and the wider cultural landscape represent different temporal and geographical scales: here, the focus is a dated mill layer; there, a variety of traces spanning many centuries.
Lakes and waterways
The Klovassdraget comprises three large lakes: Storvatnet, Mellomvatnet and Klotindsvatnet. There are also the smaller lakes Hammervannet and à stjønna. Kloelva extends from Klostraumen to the sea. This distinguishes five named lakes and one watercourse that describes the connection between Klostraumen and the sea.
Ăksnes as a wider travel destination
The wider travel destination of Ăksnes comprises 220 islands, islets and skerries. Anda Nature Reserve is a Ramsar site in the municipality of Ăksnes in Nordland, at the northern end of Langøya. Anda is home to one of the largest colonies of puffins in Nordland. From 15 April to 31 July, landing on Anda is prohibited to protect nesting seabirds; check the applicable rules before planning a landing.
Another seasonal option in the wider travel destination of Ăksnes is the Stø Whale & Arctic Wildlife Safari, which departs from Stø in VesterĂĽlen. The safari looks for whales, puffins, seabirds, seals and other marine wildlife. It operates during the summer season from June to August and is subject to weather, sea conditions and availability. Check the season and availability before including it in your travel plans.
