Matagalpa offers different ways to explore coffee and local history, archaeological collections, and nature. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: which themes would you like to put at the center of your visit? The destinations featured here are located in different parts of the department.

Coffee and Local History

The Museo Nacional del Café in Matagalpa has five exhibition rooms. They are dedicated to the origins of the Indigenous people of Matagalpa, the history of the city and its immigrants, and the history and production of coffee. The exhibition thus covers both local history and coffee as a product.

San Ramón is historically considered the birthplace of coffee in northern Nicaragua; the region’s first coffee plantation was established within its boundaries. The Museo de la Revolución Flecheros de Yúcul offers another way to explore local history. It preserves photographs, biographies, documents, historical objects, and accounts relating to the history of the town, the participation of the Indigenous people of Matagalpa, and revolutionary events that shaped the development of the municipality and Nicaragua’s northern region.

Archaeological Collections in Sébaco

Two museums in Sébaco have different areas of focus. The Museo Arqueológico de Chagüitillo has four exhibition rooms about the lives of Indigenous peoples. The objects on display include pre-Columbian urns, stone tools, grinding stones, and mortars. The Museo de Arqueología e Historia de Sébaco displays ceramics, statues, stone objects, and petroglyphs, as well as historical documents covering more than 300 years of local history.

The museum’s collections also include retablos featuring historical figures. Old documents cover events such as the Guerra Nacional, the War of the Constitution, and the move to Nuevo Sébaco de Asunción in 1833. Sébaco thus brings together archaeological evidence and later local history as distinct themes.

Cloud Forest, Volcanic Caldera, and Waterfall

The Reserva Natural Cerro Pancasán in Matiguás offers a well-preserved cloud forest with diverse flora and fauna. The natural area also offers guided hikes along trails and panoramic views from the summit. Those interested in the geological landscape can visit the Reserva Natural Serranía de Quirragua near Cerro Pancasán: an ancient volcanic caldera formed during the Tertiary period. Its peaks lie between 700 and 1,338 meters above sea level.

The Cascada La Selva in Rancho Grande offers a different natural attraction. Its waterfall is about six meters high. Forest, geological formations, and the waterfall each represent a different aspect of the department’s landscape; choose the natural setting that best suits your travel plans.

Crafts and a Traditional Celebration

In the municipality of El Plomo, the four women artisans of Mujeres Artesanas de El Plomo make fashion jewelry from natural seeds. Visitors can watch demonstrations of the process and make their own pieces. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, confirm its current availability before your visit.

Sébaco celebrates its traditional festival honoring its patron saint, Santiago Apóstol, on July 24 and 25. It begins with the Demanda del Santo: in this procession, the image of the saint visits every neighborhood in the city. If you plan to time your trip to coincide with the festival, check the dates locally in advance.
