Manantial La Pila is located 1.5 kilometres from the town centre. It is associated with guided hikes and the study of local history; vegetation and the sounds of the forest shape the surroundings. Manantial Río Limón is also located near the destination, a few kilometres away in the upper part of the lagoon. It is associated with hiking, horseback riding and observing flora and fauna. The two spring sites offer different experiences: La Pila combines guided hikes with local history, while Río Limón adds horseback riding and nature observation to hiking.
Views and Municipal Facilities
Mirador El Boquete is located in the municipality of Diriá, on a historic hill. From there, the view stretches to the city of Granada, Volcán Mombacho, the lagoon and the Humedales de Tisma wetlands. In the same municipality, Parque Municipal de Diriá has benches, lighting and children’s play areas, as well as a covered multi-purpose sports area. It is intended for basketball, indoor football and volleyball. The viewpoint and the park represent different aspects: the Mirador offers views of named landscapes and city sights, while the park brings together municipal facilities.
Church History in the Municipality of Diriá
Antigua Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol in the municipality of Diriá dates from the second half of the 18th century. An earlier church was destroyed in the 1739 earthquake; after that, the church remained in ruins for years before the present building was constructed. Its massive adobe walls and simple façade define its popular Baroque style, inspired by Spanish architecture. In 1956, the church was declared National Cultural Heritage. The building thus reflects several historical periods: the destruction of the earlier church, the years it spent in ruins and the construction of the present church.
Festivals and Traditions
The main festivals in the municipality of Diriá in honour of San Pedro Apóstol run from 18 June to 22 July. La Yegüita is regarded as a penitential and devotional ceremony more than 300 years old. Its origins are traced to Indigenous rituals in which people prayed for good harvests and protection from illness. Atol de Ánimas is also observed in October: daily masses for the deceased are held in rotation in different homes in the municipality. Afterwards, participants are offered traditional corn atol, usually made from varieties such as Pujagua or Chilote. The festivals of San Pedro Apóstol and the practices associated with La Yegüita and Atol de Ánimas offer different insights into the municipality’s religious and cultural traditions.
Diriá in the Granada Destination
Diriá is one of the four municipalities in the department of Granada, whose main city is Granada. Volcán Mombacho is one of the views from Mirador El Boquete. In the wider Granada destination, it reaches 1,345 metres above sea level; cloud forest and humid tropical forest shape the landscape at its summit. This places the view of the volcano in a broader regional context.
