Cloud forest and humid tropical forest grow at the summit of Mombacho Volcano, at an elevation of 1,345 meters above sea level. The combination of altitude and two forest types gives the Department of Granada a distinctive natural character. But the region’s landscape does not end at the volcano’s summit: lagoons and river areas are also part of it, while the city of Granada and Nandaime offer different cultural discoveries.

Landscape between summit and lagoons

The protected areas of the Department of Granada include the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve, Zapatera Archipelago National Park and the Mecatepe Lagoons. Apoyo Lagoon extends across the departments of Granada and Masaya. Its geographic scope therefore encompasses both departments, rather than belonging exclusively to Granada.

Another named landscape lies within the Río Manares Nature Reserve in Nandaime. The reserve includes the lagoon systems of Mecatepe and Juan Tallo, as well as the Ochomogo River, which forms the natural boundary of the municipality. The area’s natural features are clearly distinct: at Mombacho, altitude and summit forest define the landscape; Apoyo Lagoon is notable for its connection to two departments; and in Río Manares, the lagoon system and the Ochomogo River as a municipal boundary take center stage.

Cityscape and festival traditions

The Department of Granada comprises the municipalities of Granada, Nandaime, Diriá and Diriomo; the city of Granada is the departmental capital. Colonial architecture preserves the city’s historic center. In Nicaragua, Granada is one of the prominent cities where historic heritage, art and an active cultural life come together.

Nandaime brings a different cultural dimension. The Dance of the Little Devils gives its festivities a theatrical and symbolic quality; children and adults take part. The Atabal is celebrated during the patron-saint festivities and features poems, verses and songs in honor of the Virgin of Santa Ana. These different forms of expression exist side by side: the dance centers on performance and symbolism, while the Atabal centers on words and music.

Experience Granada in different ways

Carriage rides with a driver are offered in the tourist center of the city of Granada. Nightlife is concentrated mainly along Calle La Calzada. Boat trips to the Isletas depart from Granada. The settings are distinctly different: carriage rides take place in the tourist center, nightlife is concentrated on one street, and boat trips travel from the city to the Isletas.

These distinctions can help you organize your trip around your own interests: nature on the volcano’s summit and in the lagoon areas, colonial architecture in the historic center, or festival traditions in Nandaime.
