Discover Paeroa through two distinctive stories: as a port on the Waihou and Ohinemuri rivers, and as the birthplace of the Lemon and Paeroa drink. The Historical Maritime Park focuses on maritime history and paddle steamer cruises; the Giant L&P Bottle commemorates the local drinkâs history. The wider Hauraki District adds regional landscapes and historic sites to these themes.
Harbour and River History
The historic buildings of the Paeroa Historical Maritime Park house a significant collection about the maritime history of Paeroaâs role as a port. The park, north of Paeroa, features restored historic vessels and exhibitions. Cruises on the paddle steamer Tamati are also offered on the Waihou and Ohinemuri rivers. Departure times depend on the tides; check the schedule before your visit if you plan to take a cruise.
The Paeroa Historical Maritime Park is also a stop on the Hauraki Rail Trail. This brings local maritime history and a section of the regional trail together in one place, without requiring you to treat the two as the same thing: the museum focuses on the harbour and shipping, while the trail connects Paeroa and Waihi.
The Trail and Historic Structures
The PaeroaâWaihi section of the Hauraki Rail Trail is 24 kilometres long and takes about three hours. It passes through the historic and scenic Karangahake Gorge. The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway also follows the former railway line between Paeroa and Waihi in the Hauraki District. The walkway provides access to mining and railway remnants.
Features of the Historic Walkway include two steel truss bridges and a one-kilometre-long railway tunnel. These structures give this section a different historical focus from Paeroaâs river and harbour history: here, the former railway line and mining past take centre stage. Visitors can leave their vehicle at the Historical Maritime Park and reach their destinations by bicycle along the Hauraki Rail Trail.
Local Landmarks and Collections
The Giant L&P Bottle is a landmark celebrating L&P, a New Zealand soft drink originally made in Paeroa. The structure is seven metres tall and 1.3 metres in diameter. Lemon and Paeroa was first made in Paeroa by combining lemon juice with carbonated mineral water from Paeroa Springs. The Band Rotunda in Paeroa Domain adds another historic site to the townâs story: it is classified as a Category 2 Historic Place.
The collections at the Paeroa & District Historical Society Museum also offer insights into the townâs history. They include an extensive photographic display and complete editions of the Paeroa Gazette from 1896 to 1996. The museum also holds more than 500 pieces of Royal Albert porcelain, MÄori and European artefacts, and the Dufty Shell Collection.
The Wider Hauraki District
The Hauraki District stretches from the shellfish beaches of Kaiaua and PĆ«korokoro/Miranda on the Firth of Thames in TÄ«kapa Moana (Hauraki Gulf) to the white sand beaches of Whiritoa on the Pacific coast. Within the district, the Hauraki Plains are a landscape of reclaimed land and dairy pastures. These regional landscapes are a distinct part of the destination and should not be confused with Paeroaâs local history.
Thousands of wading birds can be seen on the shell banks and tidal flats of PĆ«korokoro on the Firth of Thames. Visibility depends on the tides. Those interested in the districtâs industrial history can also visit Victoria Battery, built in 1897â1898. Remains include ore roasting kilns, access tunnels and a site museum in the former transformer house. The site also features a tramway, tours of underground kilns and a walkway above the ore kilns. These visitor experiences may vary according to the operating schedule.
Further regional insights are available at the Waihi Arts Centre and Museum and on the Waihi Gold Mine Tours. The museum presents the history of the gold-mining era from the 1880s to the 1950s in the Karangahake and Waihi area; a visit includes a talk, hands-on activities and time to explore the exhibitions. The Waihi Gold Mine Tours take visitors inside the safety fence and show the process from ore extraction and crushing through to final processing. Bookings and access arrangements may change; check before your visit.
