Geothermally heated water feeds the natural hot pools at Hot Water Beach. They are right on the beach and are available year-round. Visitors can dig their own spa pool in the sand. The tide level is key: the hot springs are accessible only at low tide. There is generally an opportunity to make a pool for about two hours on either side of low tide. Check the tide table for the date of your visit and plan your time at the beach to coincide with low tide. The time is an approximate window, not a fixed time for every day. The tides wash away the pools that have been dug, so your own spa is a temporary part of the beach visit.

Beach setting and cultural context

The beach faces the Pacific Ocean and Castle Rock, with pƍhutukawa-covered cliffs lining the coast at both ends. The natural pools are near a urupā and a pā. Ngāti Hei and the local community protect this taonga. Keep this context in mind when visiting the area, and treat the place with respect.

Practical information for your beach visit

Spades for digging can be hired from Hotties Cafe, Hot Water Beach Cafe and Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. Check availability with the respective providers before you arrive. Parking is available at the Main Beach carpark, Te Waiwai carpark and Main Store carpark; charges may apply at the Main Store carpark. Parking rules and fees may change, so it is a good idea to check the current conditions.

Hot Water Beach has strong ocean currents and rip currents. If you swim, stay between the Surf Lifeguard Service flags. Patrol availability and ocean conditions vary; plan your swim according to the conditions on the day.

Surfing and art as other interests

Te Puia Surf Co offers private one-to-one or group lessons in shortboard and longboard surfing. The lesson format and board type give you two specific options to choose from; check the current offerings before your trip. Moko Artspace exhibits works by well over 100 artists. The artists involved may change. Art thus adds another local focus alongside the beach and surfing.

Planning your stay

If you choose Hot Water Beach as a destination for your stay, you can plan activities around their different requirements: low tide is key for the natural pools, while a surf lesson depends on the provider’s current availability. First consider whether digging in the sand, a surf lesson or both will shape your stay; then plan your itinerary accordingly.
