Hamilton combines landscaped gardens and paths along the Waikato River with nature and cultural attractions. The different destinations in Hamilton offer a variety of ways to explore them.

Gardens and landscaped history

Hamilton Gardens comprises 18 remarkable gardens, designed as journeys through time, culture and imagination. The site covers 45 hectares of garden and parkland. A highlights tour and an audio guide offer two ways to explore the gardens; both are designed for the whole family. There is also a café and a playground on site.

The Hamilton Gardens experience also includes historic sculptures and landmarks of cultural, social or political significance. This destination combines landscaped garden worlds with places and works that offer more than a purely horticultural perspective.

Along the Waikato River and around Hamilton Lake

The Hamilton City River Rides and Walks run along the Waikato River through the centre of Hamilton. The riverside path on the western, urban side stretches from Cobham Bridge to Horotiu Bridge and connects to Hamilton Gardens, Memorial Park and Munro’s Walkway. The path is wheelchair accessible and has numerous access points, parking areas and conveniently located toilets. As facilities may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.

Hamilton Lake Domain has walking paths, cycleways and a loop track. The area covers 101 hectares; by comparison, Hamilton Gardens covers 45 hectares. The lake is used for dragon boating, Waka Ama, sailing, Sea Scouts and remote-controlled boat racing. Hamilton Lake Domain also has accessible play equipment. Its condition may change with future upgrades, so it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

Another popular excursion is Hamilton Zoo. Set in 25 hectares of wooded surroundings, it offers animal experiences featuring, among others, tigers, chimpanzees and parrots. The zoo offers a different focus from the gardens and riverside paths, with animals and their surroundings at the centre.
