Matakana offers a mix of village amenities and local history. Matakana Village includes boutiques, galleries, cafés, restaurants, wine bars and a cinema complex. If you have specific shops in mind, bear in mind that individual businesses may change. The First World War Memorial on Matakana Road is a publicly accessible historic site and a Matakana landmark.

Matakana Village and its development

In 2002, Richard and Christine Didsbury bought Matakana’s former timber yard and developed it into an experience village with its own character. A farmers’ market was established in collaboration with the community. Architect Noel Lane designed a village complex that connected the main street with the largely forgotten waterfront area.

The market and the village complex represent different aspects of development: the market was established in collaboration with the community, while Lane’s design physically connected the main street and the waterfront area. The Village’s history thus encompasses both community initiative and the design of the local area. This background gives today’s village amenities a specific historical context.

A memorial site with two timeframes

The First World War Memorial was created by William Henry Feldon in 1919. It is classified as a Category 2 historic place, is publicly accessible and is a Matakana landmark. Its classification, public access and role as a landmark describe different aspects: its historic status, accessibility and significance to the area.

The year 1919 marks the creation of the sculpture. Matakana’s community still gathers there every year for commemorations. This brings two timeframes together: the year the work was created and the continuing local tradition of remembrance.

Practical information for your visit

The miniature railway at Matakana Country Park runs on weekends and during school holidays from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm, weather permitting. If the ride is a fixed part of your itinerary, plan your visit for this time window and check the timetable in advance. Both the stated operating days and the weather conditions therefore matter when choosing your day.

Matakana Village is wheelchair accessible. However, some shops may have narrow doors and entrances. If access to a particular shop is important for your visit, it’s best to check in advance: accessibility across the Village does not automatically guarantee access through every individual shop entrance.

Matakana Village is about 45 minutes north of central Auckland and can be reached by car or with a tour operator. Journey times may vary depending on traffic, so treat this as a guide rather than a guaranteed arrival time.
