Waiatarua brings together native rainforest, sweeping views and traces of the Bendall family. The area lies in the heart of the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area. Large, continuous areas of original and regenerating native rainforest border it to the west and south; the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park also adjoins Waiatarua there. This gives the destination a distinctive profile shaped by both landscape and history.

Landscape and views

From its elevated position, Waiatarua offers excellent views of Auckland's urban area, Waitemata Harbour and the Waitakere Ranges. Alongside these expansive vistas, the area's ecological significance is a focus in its own right: Waiatarua's ecosystems are of national importance and support a wide variety of native flora and fauna. The naturally functioning Oratia Stream has ecological value of its own; it also provides habitat for native plants and animals. Views and habitat thus offer two distinct perspectives on Waiatarua.

West Coast route and local viewpoints

Waiatarua lies on the route to the beaches of the West Coast. The main ridge runs through Waiatarua along Scenic Drive; in the Waitakere District Plan, it is designated a “sensitive ridgeline”. Near the corner of Scenic Drive and West Coast Road, there is a small viewpoint with a good view over the former Bendall land, which is now completely forested.

Bendall traces and local history

The Bendall family home still stands on West Coast Road in Waiatarua. It was remodelled around 1920 and is set among oak trees attributed to Mary Bendall. Mary Bendall ran a lodging house in Waiatarua for tourists and travellers. Around 1887, a bridle track to Henderson railway station was opened from her property. The existing house and the historic bridle track represent different aspects of local history: a building on the one hand and a former connection to the railway station on the other. The two dates refer to different events: the bridle track opened around 1887, and the house was remodelled around 1920.

Culture in the surrounding area

Nearby Waiatarua, the Arataki Visitor Centre provides information on numerous hiking and walking trails. Interactive exhibits, informative signs and stories offer insights into Māori heritage and the significance of the Waitakere Ranges. Here, trail guidance and cultural context come together.

Rose Hellaby House is located at 515 Scenic Drive in Waiatarua. A viewpoint in the rear garden offers sweeping panoramic views of the Waitākere Ranges and Auckland's skyline; the house is currently being restored as an arts, crafts and souvenir shop. By contrast, the small viewpoint near Scenic Drive and West Coast Road looks out over the former Bendall land: the two viewpoints have different outlooks.
