Sluiskil offers several options for a stay: the Ommetje Sluiskil walking route, sites of remembrance and architectural history, and a sports facility. Nearby, the Papeschorpolder nature area adds a landscape with a creek and a nesting-bird island. This allows you to focus your stay on the themes that interest you. One particularly distinctive combination is a walking route with its own crossing and earth banks that symbolise tunnel tubes.

Walking the Ommetje Sluiskil

The Ommetje Sluiskil is 5.91 kilometres long and follows the Langs Linies en Kreken walking network. The route includes unpaved paths, which you can take into account when planning. It crosses the western Rijkswaterleiding using the hand-pulled Sleurschuut ferry. Check the latest information on using this crossing before setting out. The route length and ferry crossing are two specific features to consider when planning this walk as part of your stay.

Along the route, in a meadow grazed by sheep, are two parallel earth banks, each 100 metres long. They symbolise tunnel tubes that run here 17 metres below the ground and beneath the canal. The banks make the connection between the visible landscape and the tunnel tubes beneath the canal easy to see. This gives the walk a distinctive theme that extends beyond the route itself.

Memorial sites, collection and architectural history

The Crash Monument is located at the intersection of Minister Lelyplein and Baljuwlaan. It commemorates French Lieutenant Erwin Emile Boudry, who died as a result of wartime hostilities on 17 September 1944. The monument includes a black natural-stone memorial with text and a photograph, a stainless-steel aircraft silhouette and an information panel made of the same material. Its design combines the honouree’s name and image with an aircraft motif and additional information.

Museum Sluiskil permanently houses Gerben Dijkstra’s special firefighting collection. A guided tour can also be included as an option. The bust of Lodewijk van den Berg is a tribute in his birthplace, Sluiskil. It was unveiled on 31 May 2013 by van den Berg and his wife Jacqueline.

The Sint-Antonius-van-Paduakerk is a municipal monument; it was built in 1901 in the Neo-Romanesque style. Neo-Romanesque refers to the revival of Romanesque architectural forms. Its construction date, style and protected status offer specific points to consider when looking at the church and its architectural history.

Nature and activities in Sluiskil and the surrounding area

The 32-hectare Papeschorpolder nature area lies between Sas van Gent and Sluiskil, near Sluiskil. It includes a creek with slightly brackish water and an island for nesting birds. Its area, water and nesting-bird island create a landscape theme distinct from the memorial sites in the town.

PumpTrack Sluiskil is located in a sports park, which also has fitness and play equipment. The difference between the activity options is clear: the Ommetje is a 5.91-kilometre walking route with unpaved paths and a ferry crossing; PumpTrack is in a sports park with additional equipment. This allows you to consider the walk and sports facility as different parts of your plans for the area.
