Axel combines technical monuments and local history with opportunities to explore the landscape on foot or along signposted routes. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay: culture and industrial heritage, walks and nature, or other activities in the town. Some of the highlights tell very specific stories about Axel and its surroundings.
Culture, Technology and History
The sculpture De Erpelkapper recalls the traditional nickname for the residents of Axel. It is linked to collecting potatoes after the harvest. This connection to a former work practice makes the monument a vivid introduction to local history: the name refers not only to Axel, but also to a specific activity associated with the town.
Another striking technical monument is the Axel Water Tower, built in 1936. It has been opened to the public and can be climbed from the ground floor to a height of 50 metres. Check the latest access information before visiting. The site also includes a Heemtuin (local nature garden) with distinctive natural features. This gives the site a nature-related aspect in addition to its industrial heritage.
The Town Mill adds a different historical dimension: it dates from 1750 and is still capable of milling. Together with the Water Tower, it offers two different examples of technological history, although they do not represent the same function or period. Visitors wishing to explore Axel’s culture can therefore treat these monuments as separate stops and focus on their respective characteristics.
The Oorlogsmuseum Gdynia also has a clearly defined historical context. It opened in 2004 in a historic farm barn at Tweede Verkorting 3 in Axel. The 60-kilometre Polish Liberation Route Oost-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen starts and ends at the museum. Its route and its starting and finishing point give it a distinct connection to local history; the stated length helps you assess it as a separate undertaking.
Hiking and Exploring the Landscape
Smitsschorre is a wooded area well suited to hiking. From its northern or western side, visitors can enjoy views of the Axelse Kreek and Zwartenhoek. These views are therefore specific to those sides of the area. This helps you choose a landscape focus: Smitsschorre combines woodland and hiking with views of two named landscape features.
The Axelse Kreek is one of the largest creeks in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Its landscape includes narrow belts of reeds, while several low-lying, wet pastures lie on its southern side. These features describe different sides of the waterway rather than suggesting a uniform shoreline. Signposts for hiking and cycling routes across the Vlakte and through the Axelse Polders are located at the foot of the Water Tower on Kinderdijk. They indicate specific areas to help you choose a route.
More Activities and Practical Information
Axel also has a clearly defined attraction for motorsport enthusiasts: the RES motocross track is about 1,750 metres long and features sand, several jumps and banked turns. There is also a separate track for young riders. It also has sand and banked turns, but smaller jumps. The comparison shows how the two tracks differ based on the features described, without making any claims about participation or access.
Other attractions offer different experiences. The 't Plaatje outdoor swimming pool has a children’s pool; at the Natuurspeelbos Axel, the play equipment is made from natural materials. Guided town tours are also available in Axel. You can choose between a water-related visit, a play area, a guided tour, or the landscape and cultural attractions mentioned above. Check tour dates and times in advance.
The weekly market in Axel takes place every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you would like to include it in your stay, check the opening hours before travelling. Along with the guided town tours, the market is another reason to check dates when planning; the cultural, nature and activity themes described above offer different options for your other outings.
