Kortgene is located on Lake Veere, a nature area and water sports paradise. For planning a trip, cycling routes with specific distances and historical landmarks in the village offer two different perspectives. This makes it possible to decide whether a stay should focus on a circuit around the lake, a ride across Noord-Beveland or Kortgene’s local history.

On Lake Veere: Cycling Routes and Ferry

The 54.5-kilometre Rond het Veerse Meer cycling route runs around the lake. During the summer season, a tourist ferry service can be used between Kortgene and Wolphaartsdijk. Many cyclists use the Kortgene–Wolphaartsdijk ferry to complete or shorten the circuit around Lake Veere. As the service is seasonal, check the current operating days before planning your trip.

A second option is the 36-kilometre Ontdek Noord-Beveland cycling route. It follows the contours of the island and passes through Kortgene. This gives you a choice of two routes with different lengths and itineraries: a circuit around Lake Veere and a route following the contours of the island that passes through Kortgene.

The Delta Marina marina in Kortgene may also be useful when planning a trip: boats and bicycles, among other things, are available for rent there. As the services offered by operators can change, check whether the option you want is available before making specific plans. Bicycle rentals and the routes described are different ways to plan a trip around Kortgene.

Local History and Buildings

In the Middle Ages, Kortgene was the only place on Noord-Beveland with town rights, and it was first mentioned as a town in 1431. The village also has a clearly visible Voorstraat layout, typical of villages on Noord-Beveland. These two aspects reveal different facets of the area’s history: Kortgene’s special historical status on the island and a characteristic layout that can still be seen in the village today.

A prominent landmark is the De Korenbloem windmill on Molendijk. Built in 1873, the mill is a round stone gallery windmill, with a wingspan of 21.74 metres. Its year of construction, design and measurements provide specific points of reference for understanding the mill as a testament to Kortgene’s engineering and architectural history.

The village church, Dorpskerk, also reflects several historical periods. During the storm surges around 1530, only the church tower remained standing. Construction of the present-day Dorpskerk began in 1684, and the nave was completely rebuilt in 1686. The pulpit dates from 1625. Its date therefore predates the start of construction of the present-day church and adds an earlier date to its building history.

There are clear differences to consider when choosing what to focus on: the two cycling routes vary in length and itinerary, while the windmill, Voorstraat layout and Dorpskerk offer insights into Kortgene’s architectural and local history. Lake Veere complements these local features as a nature area and water sports destination.
