Geersdijk offers several distinct reasons to stay: Aerpel, a monumental potato sculpture, local history, seasonal gardens and a 13 km walking route. When planning, it is worth keeping these highlights separate: the Pompoentuin has a clearly stated seasonal opening period, the Pluktuin has several garden areas, and the walking route has a specific length and named starting point.

Art and village history

In March 2026, the public artwork “Aerpel” was created in Geersdijk. The reclining potato sculpture is made of recycled hardwood and measures three metres wide and 1.76 metres high. Its material, form and dimensions make the work a distinct art highlight during a stay.

A walking path has been laid out around Aerpel. There is also a bench where visitors can look out over the landscape. If you plan to stop there, check the local conditions.

The village layout also offers a concrete glimpse of Geersdijk: the village was laid out as a Vorstraat village. Provincialeweg forms the dike, which Burgemeester P. Wissestraat meets at a right angle. The settlement structure can therefore be understood through the relationship between these two streets.

Present-day Geersdijk was rebuilt in 1668 after the medieval settlement failed to survive several storm surges. Alongside the present-day village layout, this marks a clearly dated turning point in the village’s history.

Gardens and seasonal visits

The Pompoentuin is open during pumpkin season, from early August to the end of October. Check the dates before your visit. The Pluktuin includes more than 60 flower varieties, a perennial garden and a dahlia-picking garden. Seasonal availability may vary.

The Pluktuin has a terrace with a picnic table and instructions on picking; scissors and rubber bands are also provided. The gardens therefore have different focuses: the stated seasonal period is key for the Pompoentuin, while the Pluktuin offers several flower areas and picking instructions.

De Pompoenwinkel is located at ’t Hof Geersdijk, just outside the village centre. It is housed in a renovated machinery shed dating from 1890, part of which has been set up as a farm shop. Alongside the garden areas, it offers an example of local architectural history.

Walking and waterside scenery

The 13 km “Geersdijk en Emelisse” walking route starts at the Provincialeweg bus stop in Geersdijk. It follows a creek that recalls the former river Wijtvliet; the Veerse Meer is to the right of the path. The route’s length, starting point and described landscape features give it a distinct focus. Check the trail conditions and practical transport details before setting off.

In 1808, a harbour was built at the mouth of the Wijtvliet for transporting sugar beets. This historical use adds a specific link to the town’s former transport history.

When looking for a hotel in Geersdijk, your travel dates and preferred focus offer two concrete starting points: for the Pompoentuin, the seasonal opening period matters; for the walking route, its stated length and starting point are key. Aerpel and the village history round out the options with art and historical context.
