In Kapelle, the attractions range from the French military cemetery and a church at the centre of the circular village to fruit-growing culture at the Zeeuws Fruit Museum. Memorial 40-45 Kapelle is a ten-minute walk from Kapelle/Biezelinge railway station. Check the route before your visit, as conditions along the way may change.

Commemoration and Church Architecture

Kapelle’s French military cemetery is the final resting place of many French soldiers who fell in the Netherlands during the Second World War. Charles Trepel and René Guy are also buried there. These two names add specific individuals to the commemoration of the many fallen soldiers.

The Nederlands Hervormde Kerk is at the centre of the circular village, with houses arranged around it. The church dates from 1908, and its front tower from 1877–1878. With its tower and family grave, it is of architectural and cultural-historical significance and has group value. The interior of the Hervormde Kerk van Kapelle survived the Beeldenstorm.

Fruit-Growing Culture at the Zeeuws Fruit Museum

At the Zeeuws Fruit Museum, you can operate the preserved auction bell from 1917 yourself. This gives you a sense of how a fruit auction used to work. In 2023, the museum offered another perspective on its collection by opening the depot: visitors were given a behind-the-scenes look at items in storage.

For groups of 4 to 20 people, the museum offers guided tours for €25.00 per group, by appointment only. The museum café is open to everyone, even without a museum visit; lunch is also available for groups. You can also visit the museum shop without visiting the museum. It sells Zeeuwse regional products as well as products related to fruit and fruit growing. As arrangements and product ranges may change, check the group tour, café and shop in advance.

Walking Routes and Exercise

The Fruit Route is a 17-kilometre walking trail through the orchards around Kapelle. The QR-FIT exercise route has two shorter options: a long route of 2.4 kilometres with 12 exercise posts and a short route of 1.4 kilometres with 9 exercise posts. The route runs from the De Bloesem sports centre towards Ambachtsherenwegeling and back to the sports centre via the Kapelse bos.

Another exercise route has 16 exercises. It is aimed mainly at older adults who want to work on their strength and balance and do stretching exercises. This route therefore has a different focus from the QR-FIT route with its exercise posts.

The Kapelse bos has been transformed into a gnome forest; the gnomes can be recognised by their red hats. Next to the forest is a nature-themed playground with tree trunks and mounds to climb and scramble over.

Landscape, Literature and Village Life

The Kapelse Moer is part of the Yerseke and Kapelse Moer Natura 2000 area and is one of Zeeland’s oldest cultural landscapes. It has been shaped by water, peat and human activity; today, it is home to special plants and meadow birds. Public access is restricted.

Annie M.G. Schmidt was born in Kapelle in 1911. In the Zuidhoek neighbourhood, also known as the “Jip en Janneke neighbourhood”, the street names are taken from characters in her stories.

The Kapelse Dagen is an annual village festival in the centre of Kapelle, featuring sports activities, a funfair, music and a street market. The 2026 edition took place from Thursday, 27 August, to Saturday, 29 August. For cycle planning, the FIKS Zeeland Midden cycling map is available at Lectori bookshop, Weststraat 9–11 in Kapelle.
