The museum garden at the ZeeuwsFruitMuseum is home to 170 different fruit trees, each with its own name. The museum explores the history of fruit and fruit growing and brings it to life with a working auction clock: a digital auctioneer explains how an auction works. In this way, the museum connects the fruit trees with a practical insight into the auction process. The planting may change over time. The museum shop sells regional products; its selection may also change.
The Fruit Route and Zeeland’s countryside
The 17-kilometre Fruit Route runs through the “Blossom of Zeeland” and past the Fruitteeltmuseum in Kapelle. In season, roadside stalls along the route sell freshly picked apples, homemade jam and other treats. If you are planning to cycle the route, check its course before setting off. The centres of Kapelle, Biezelinge, Eversdijk and Schore are surrounded by green landscapes and orchards. Another type of landscape is the Kapelse Moer, one of the last remaining areas of authentic Zeeland polder landscape.
Village scenes and paths in Wemeldinge
Wemeldinge lies on the Oosterschelde. Its promenade invites you to take a walk with views of the water; walking trails pass through the historic village centre and orchards, as well as along the Oosterschelde. The village’s narrow lanes, known as “slopjes”, also tell stories of former residents: they lead to the streets behind the Dorpsstraat, and signs name the people who once lived in the lanes. The Vliedberg (Kasteelberg), together with the adjoining church grounds, is also the oldest part of the village; it is dated to approximately the 11th century. Here, different ways of discovering local history sit side by side: through paths and lanes, as well as through the approximate dating of the old village centre.
Church and remembrance
The interior of the Hervormde Kerk van Kapelle survived the Iconoclasm. Another way to explore history is the Museum Memorial 40-45 Kapelle: through its collection, it tells personal stories of French soldiers in the Netherlands and of the residents of Kapelle who knew them. There are 229 French soldiers buried at the French Military Cemetery of Honour in Kapelle; it is the only French Second World War cemetery of honour in the Netherlands. Every May, the museum and the municipality of Kapelle jointly hold the Toujours Kapelle event week. Check the exact dates and programme before visiting.
Diving in the Oosterschelde
On the south side of the Oosterschelde is the Netherlands’ first 5-star diving hotspot. The dive sites between Wemeldinge and Kattendijke are known for their abundant and diverse underwater life. Near Wemeldinge, the “de Hoek” dive site is on the Oosterschelde. The “Galjoen zonder poen” wreck is about a five-minute swim from shore and lies at a depth of approximately 25 metres. These details distinguish the named dive sites by location and depth. Check the conditions and safety requirements before diving; access to the wreck also depends on the tides and conditions.
