Nieuwdorp brings together cultural history and a specific walking option. If you're planning a stay, you can choose between regional wartime history, local remembrance, historic village architecture and a six-kilometre walking route. Which historical perspective interests you? Would you like to compare different architectural styles, or include a walk as well? You can prioritise these interests according to your preferences rather than combining every experience into a single visit.

Wartime history and remembrance

The Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland presents the history of Zeeland during the Second World War, with the Battle of the Scheldt as the central theme. Its focus is therefore regional, while also centred on a specific historical subject. Nieuwdorp's war memorial takes a different approach: it commemorates fellow townspeople who lost their lives in acts of war during the occupation. The history of Zeeland and local remembrance thus stand side by side, without telling the same story.

Bevrijdingspark Zeeland is located in Nieuwdorp, in the municipality of Borsele. This open-air park of the Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland covers approximately three hectares. The museum and outdoor grounds are distinct formats within the same institutional context. The park places this context in Nieuwdorp and complements the regional historical focus with a clearly identified outdoor site.

The war memorial stands on the Dorpsplein, next to the Reformed Church. It is a natural-stone obelisk topped with a Dutch lion. Its dedication and precise form give the memorial its own character: it commemorates fellow townspeople who lost their lives in the war, while the obelisk and lion define its distinctive appearance.

Village square and architectural history

The picturesque Dorpsring in Nieuwdorp dates from the 17th century. Other historic buildings include two churches with different construction dates and architectural features. Bethelkerk at Coudorp 1 was built in 1917–1918 to a design by H. van der Kloot Meijburg and features restrained Expressionist elements. At Ring 2 stands the former Reformed Church: a Neoclassical hall church from 1841 with an octagonal façade tower.

The churches can be compared on more than just their age. Bethelkerk is characterised by its architect and restrained Expressionist elements; the former Reformed Church can be described as a Neoclassical hall church with an octagonal façade tower. Nieuwdorp is thus home to two clearly distinct architectural forms. Their dates and features offer a concrete way to explore local history that goes beyond simply knowing a building's name.

Another historical layer can be found in the tower of Bethelkerk: it houses a bell cast by Gilles van Gilde in 1710. Its casting date is well before the church building's construction in 1917–1918. Comparing the two dates reveals that the bell and the building represent different historical moments in the church's history.

Walking in Nieuwdorp

A walking route in Nieuwdorp starts at Verenigingsgebouw Ammekore. It is six kilometres long and can be walked independently. The named starting point and route length provide practical planning details, as does the option of walking the route on your own. This offers a different focus from the memorial, church and museum: the emphasis here is on walking a set route. If you want to combine culture and exercise, you can make the walk a separate focus of your stay.
