A Neo-Gothic church, a Waterstaatskerk, a historic mill and clog-making give Heinkenszand several clearly distinct cultural themes. There is also Natuurpark Schaapskooi Zeeland, with a brasserie, outdoor playground and animal pastures, as well as a four-hectare nature reserve on the Landlust estate. For your planning, architectural history, crafts, changing exhibitions and nature therefore offer different points of focus.

Churches and historic traces

The Neo-Gothic Roman Catholic Church of St. Blaise was built in 1864 on the site of the former 17th-century Barbestein manor house. Neo-Gothic architecture draws on Gothic forms; the style designation classifies the building architecturally, while the former manor site adds a distinct historical layer. The dates refer to different things: 1864 dates the construction of the church, while the 17th century dates the former manor house. Today's Dorpskerk replaced the earlier church, which was demolished, in 1843 and is a so-called Waterstaatskerk. The comparison draws attention to two aspects: the architectural style and earlier site of St. Blaise, and the replacement of a predecessor church and the designation Waterstaatskerk in the case of the Dorpskerk.

At Dorpsstraat, a gate with two lions, a circular pond and a moat recall the 17th-century castle park. These features extend the historical theme beyond churches and manor sites: here, the focus is on the memory of a park.

Mill, crafts and exhibitions

De Vijf Gebroeders is a grain mill built in 1851 on Stationsweg in Heinkenszand. By contrast, clog-making is the focus at Klompenmakerij Traas: clogs have been made there for more than 100 years, and the workshop is one of the last clog-making workshops in the Netherlands. The two themes are clearly distinct: the mill is notable for its year of construction and purpose, while Traas stands out for its more than century-long tradition of production and the rarity of the workshop.

Galerie 't Kunstuus offers free exhibitions and presents a new exhibition every six weeks. Unlike dated buildings, the specific programme here changes regularly. As the exhibition programme may change, check which exhibition is currently on display before your visit.

Nature and regional routes

Natuurpark Schaapskooi Zeeland has a brasserie, an outdoor playground and animal pastures. The park is located along walking and cycling routes and has a small information centre about the region. As facilities may change, check the latest information when planning a specific visit. The Landlust estate includes a four-hectare nature reserve managed by Stichting Het Zeeuwse Landschap. The nature attractions therefore have different points of focus: facilities and access to routes at Natuurpark, and the four-hectare protected area at Landlust.

At the regional level, Funbikes Zeeland offers various E-Chopper routes through Zeeland, leading to places of interest and restaurants. The E-Choppers have a range of 50 kilometres. As routes and vehicle details may change, check the latest information before planning.
