Wijk Bij Duurstede lies where the Nederrijn and Lek rivers meet. City history and river landscapes shape the themes you can build your stay around: historic buildings, a museum, walking routes and boat trips. The timings can also help with your planning: a guided city walk takes about an hour and a half, a trip on the Krommerijnder about three hours, while the Kromme Rijnpad is a 29-kilometre walking route.
Townscape, Buildings and Dorestad
The old town is designated a protected townscape of national importance. In 1769, its earth ramparts were transformed into a star-shaped walking area. Notable historic buildings include the Grote Kerk and the Oude Stadhuis. The church is one of the most significant listed monuments in Wijk Bij Duurstede; its tower is among the most important late Gothic towers in the Netherlands. The Oude Stadhuis is also a listed monument and was built in the Classical style between 1662 and 1666. The town thus brings together different architectural periods and forms.
The Rijn en Lek windmill has a unique history: it is the only windmill in the Netherlands built on top of a town gate, and it is still used to grind grain. From its gallery, you can look out over the Rhine and Lek. At the Dorestad Museum, you can learn more about Wijk Bij Duurstede’s history from the time of Dorestad onwards. The museum also houses a reconstructed Scandinavian cargo ship from Katla, which visitors can climb aboard.
Literature is another way to discover the town. The Gedichtenroute features thirteen texts displayed on walls, on plinths, on artworks or in the pavement. Op Stap met de Stadsdichter takes visitors on a walk through the historic town centre, where participants encounter poems along the way.
Guided Experiences and Planning Your Time
A city walk guided by the VVV takes about an hour and a half and covers local history from Roman times onwards. The Straatsafari is a similar length, but focuses on nature in the town: topics include swallows, ants working together and plants growing on an old town wall. The roughly 90-minute guided tour goes through the centre and ends with a snack and a drink made from wild plants. So, if you are choosing between the two, the main difference is their focus.
A Nachtwandeling is also listed for September to December 2026: a guided, roughly two-hour torchlit walk past monuments in the illuminated old town, sharing the history of the historic town. Check the dates for the relevant tours and activities before making specific plans.
River, Walking Route and Outdoor Activities
The Passantenhaven De Wijkse Haven connects the historic town centre with the expansive river landscape. On a roughly three-hour trip aboard the Krommerijnder, you can experience the nature along the banks of the Kromme Rijn. A canoe route connects Wijk Bij Duurstede and Utrecht. Designated portage points are available at locks, including in Cothen and Werkhoven.
You can also explore the connection between the town and the river region on foot: the Kromme Rijnpad runs between Utrecht and Wijk Bij Duurstede, is 29 kilometres long and follows the Kromme Rijn, partly along an old towpath. It is signposted and can be walked in either direction. TOP Stadshaven is a starting point for walking, cycling or boating, and provides information about route networks as well as parking options.
The Viking ship Dorestat 1 regularly sails to the island area of Maurik and back on Saturdays at 2 p.m. Group bookings and individual registrations are available for the trips. There are different options for a shorter or longer outing: a guided walk in the town centre, a multi-hour trip on the Kromme Rijn or a walking route that is 29 kilometres in total. Check the specific trip and registration details for your travel dates.
Find Accommodation to Suit Your Interests
Wijk Bij Duurstede combines historic buildings and Dorestad history with guided explorations, walking routes and activities on the water. If you are looking for a hotel, you can base your choice on the kind of stay you are planning: perhaps focused on city history, a guided tour or longer activities on the water. Stadsbrouwerij de Dikke adds beer history to the local attractions: since 2015, it has been brewing artisanal beers based on a historic recipe or ordinance from 1495.
