Utrecht combines architecture, urban history and design with opportunities to explore the city on foot, by bicycle or on the water. The Dom Tower, the underground DOMunder discovery tour, the musical instruments at Museum Speelklok and the Rietveld Schröder House each offer a different cultural focus. There are also the collections of the Centraal Museum and routes through the historic city centre and the green countryside. You can tailor your stay to your interests.

Tower and underground: two ways to explore history

At 112 metres and 32 centimetres tall, the Dom Tower is the highest church tower in the Netherlands. On guided tours, an experienced guide takes visitors up the tower and explains its history and restoration. If you plan to visit, check the current tour schedule in advance, as tour times may change.

DOMunder takes visitors beneath Domplein on a guided underground discovery tour. With a flashlight, they explore 2,000 years of Domplein history and archaeological treasures. The tour passes the remains of a Roman fortress and medieval buildings. The two tours therefore have different focuses: the Dom Tower tour is about the building and its restoration, while DOMunder explores archaeological finds and the history beneath the square.

Musical instruments and design

Museum Speelklok is a ten-minute walk from Utrecht Centraal station. You can also take city bus route 2 towards Museumkwartier and get off at the Domplein stop. As public transport connections may change, it is worth checking the current timetable. An interactive Musical Tour introduces mechanical instruments and explains the stories and techniques behind centuries-old musical machines. The Museum Expedition also includes a Royal Chamber with music boxes and musical clocks. The museum visit therefore centres on both the tour's demonstrations and explanations and the Expedition's collection areas mentioned above; check the current tour schedule.

The Rietveld Schröder House offers another way to explore Dutch design history. Utrecht architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld designed it in 1924 on behalf of the widow Truus Schröder. Today, the house is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a highlight of the De Stijl movement. The Centraal Museum offers a different perspective on Rietveld's work: it holds the world's largest collection of Rietveld objects.

Founded in 1838, the Centraal Museum is the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands. Its collection includes art, the history of Utrecht, fashion and applied arts. If you are interested in the breadth of these subjects as well as a single building, you will find a different focus here than at the Rietveld Schröder House.

Exploring the city and countryside

Utrecht's waterways are also part of the cityscape. The Oudegracht and its wharves form a system developed in the Middle Ages that is considered unique in the world. Walking and cycling routes lead through the historic city centre and the green countryside. This lets you include routes through different surroundings in your plans, alongside museums and architecture.

Visitors can go stand-up paddleboarding on Utrecht's Singel canals. Whether this is available during your stay depends on the providers and conditions, so check current offerings in advance. With guided cultural history tours, museum visits and activities on trails or on the water, Utrecht offers a range of ways to shape your stay.
