In Nieuwegein, discoveries range from historic structures of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie to walks, art and paths by the water. Forts, locks and a restored historic route bring the area’s architectural history into focus; the boatmen’s village, city park and boat trips offer different perspectives. For planning purposes, you can treat these as distinct themes rather than combining them into a single route.

Forts and structures of the Waterline

Today’s Fort Vreeswijk dates from 1855. Together with the rampart, it was an important part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. At Fort Vreeswijk, the Hollandse Waterlinies information centre gives visitors an overview of tourist highlights in the immediate area. Illustrations and an interactive game introduce the history of the Waterlinies: in the game, visitors take on the role of a commander. This theme therefore focuses both on the historic site and on bringing its history to life.

Another structure of the Waterline is the Plofsluis. It has been a Rijksmonument since 2014 and has cultural and historical value as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. A cycle bridge alongside the Plofsluis opened in 2015, restoring the historic route between Houten and Nieuwegein. The fort, lock and bridge reveal different aspects of the theme: the fortification with its rampart, a structure designated as a monument, and the link that restores a historic route.

Out and about by the water

Vreeswijk is Nieuwegein’s historic boatmen’s village. There, you can walk along the water past quay walls, bridges, locks and old buildings. A boat trip offers another way to get to know the waterways: Museumwerf Vreeswijk runs trips where visitors can experience the history of the distinctive locks and waterways that shaped the region over the centuries. The walk takes you past structures and through the village; the boat trip focuses on the historical development of the waterways.

There are several ways to enjoy a walk by the water at and around Fort Jutphaas: visitors can stroll or run, visit historic buildings, cross two bridges and loop around the fortress island. Stadspark Oudegein offers a different focus. It has various routes for cycling, walking and boating, as well as several bodies of water, including a large central pond. These options cover different ways to spend time outdoors, without forming a single route.

For an activity on the water, you can rent electric whisper boats and kayaks from Plek aan de Kade in summer. This is a seasonal offering. It differs from the routes in Stadspark and the boat trips run by Museumwerf: here, the focus is on rental boats and kayaks in summer, while the park offers designated recreational routes and the museum yard runs a historic boat trip.

A windmill, art and different time periods

The Oudegeinse Poldermolen is a working post mill and is open on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. Its operation depends on wind conditions. If you are interested in the mill, it is therefore worth considering its opening hours and whether it is operating as two separate factors. Visitors can enter the goat pasture at Kinderboerderij IJsselstee.

The Buitenmuseum brings art into the urban environment: it comprises 54 distinctive sculptures and artworks spread throughout Nieuwegein; a digital sculpture route is also available. At Museum Warsenhoeck, the permanent exhibition, also known as the timeline, reaches back approximately 300,000 years. The artworks and exhibition offer very different perspectives: a route through sculptures and art across the city on one hand, and a long historical perspective in the permanent exhibition on the other.

Find a hotel in Nieuwegein

When looking for a hotel in Nieuwegein, you can first consider which focus you want your stay to have: Waterline history, paths by the water, art or the windmill. Then check the location of the specific accommodation against the visits you actually plan to make. This lets you choose between forts, walks, a boat trip and seasonal boat rental according to your interests, without linking the individual places into a route that is not supported by the information.
