One of Lopik’s oldest monuments stands on Dorpstraat: the large church. The Cabauwse Molen offers another glimpse into the municipality’s historic water management.
Churches and water history
The parish of Lopik was first mentioned in a document in 1155 AD. Traces of a building style dating from the 10th to the 12th century were found in the lower section of the choir of the present-day church; the Nederlands Hervormde Church in Lopik was built in the 13th century. The dates refer to different milestones: 1155 is the first documentary mention of the parish, while the traces in the choir relate to a building style from the 10th to the 12th century. The Herenhuis at Dorpsstraat 6 dates from 1895.
The Cabauwse Molen was built in 1773 and used wind power to drain the Waterschap Lopik, Lopikerkapel en Zevenhoven until 1962. It can be visited when a blue pennant or blue flag is raised. Check before your visit to see whether the signal is displayed.
In Jaarsveld, the Dijkhuis was the headquarters of the Waterschap Lopikerwaard. Individual guided tours are offered there on Saturdays or Sundays by prior arrangement. They cover Dutch water management and dike administration, the role of water boards, the dike warden and the activities that took place in the Dijkhuis complex.
Exploring on foot and by bike
In the Lopikerwaard, you can hike along centuries-old Tiendwegen and cycle along the Lekdijk. The municipality of Lopik offers opportunities for short and long bike rides along the Lekdijk and between farms and meadows. A numbered hiking junction network adds to the options for exploring on foot: between junctions, orange signs with blue arrows point the way in various directions. From the municipality, you can plan cycling routes through the nine village centres, as well as trips to explore the Groene Hart and the province of Utrecht. Salmsteke is a starting point for exploring the surrounding area on foot or by bike.
The “De Overkant” bicycle and pedestrian ferry connects Lopik and Ameide across the Lek. It operates seasonally; check before travelling whether the service runs on your chosen date. A bicycle rental service is listed at Wielsekade 2, 3411 AA Lopik. Check in advance whether it is available on your chosen date.
Market, swimming and farm shops
A small weekly market is held on Thursday mornings from 08:30 to 12:30 on Willem-Alexanderplein in Lopik. Lobeke outdoor swimming pool in Lopik-Dorp is open for swimming during the summer months.
Farm shops in the municipality of Lopik sell products made on the respective farms. Farm-gate shopping includes Lopiker cheese, fruit grown in the countryside and freshly made farm ice cream. This means shopping focuses on specific products, while the market and outdoor pool offer other opportunities to visit at clearly specified times.
