Achterveld offers sites of cultural and historical remembrance related to food supplies, as well as trails through the rural surroundings. For planning your trip, these highlights can be easily distinguished: you can learn about the events behind the memorials, take the visiting conditions at individual sites into account or choose a walk. The walking trails also differ considerably in length and format.
Memorial sites and local history
The “Bijna Vrij” monument commemorates important talks held on 28 and 30 April 1945 between the Allies and the occupying forces at the Sint-Jozefschool in Achterveld. An agreement was reached on food supplies for the starving western Netherlands. The bronze sculpture depicts a girl with a dove on a stone column.
The “Voedselmonument” in the Moespot in Achterveld is a wooden plaque. It commemorates the food conference held in Achterveld on 28 and 30 April. The two memorials can be distinguished by their purpose and form: “Bijna Vrij” commemorates the talks and the agreement on food supplies, while the “Voedselmonument” commemorates the conference. Their designs also differ: a bronze sculpture of a girl and a dove on a stone column, and a wooden plaque.
The former De Moespot school is located at Jan van Arkelweg 6 in Achterveld.
Planning your visit
The Mariakapel of the Sint Jozefkerk is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This provides a clear window during the day for a chapel visit. The arrangements at Museum Mobiel Erfgoed are different: it is open to groups of ten or more by appointment. If you plan to visit the museum with a group, you should therefore take the appointment and group size into account. Depending on the site, planning involves either daily opening hours or an appointment for a group visit.
Walking in the surrounding area
The Snorrenhoefpad is a 10-kilometre circular walking route. It opened on 28 August 2026 and leads through the countryside around Achterveld, across pastureland, through estates and past farms and streams. The route combines a clearly defined format with a rural landscape shaped by these varied features.
The long-distance Marskramerpad trail passes through Achterveld and is 372 kilometres long. Together with the Snorrenhoefpad, it illustrates a clear difference in scale: a ten-kilometre loop on the one hand, and a 372-kilometre long-distance trail on the other. Choosing between them is therefore about different kinds of plans, not two similar circular routes. The difference in length is also relevant when planning your time.
The Marskramerpad route may change; check the latest route information before your walk. The specifications for the Snorrenhoefpad may also be adjusted in future revisions. Checking the latest information will help you plan based on the current details for each route.
