In IJsselstein, a monumental historic city centre meets green surroundings beyond the city limits. A still-working windmill dating from 1732, two Sint-Nicolaaskerken and traces of the fortifications add to the cultural attractions. You can plan your stay around architecture and urban history, the museum, traditional crafts or activities on the water.

Cityscape and architectural history

Many buildings and houses in IJsselstein are designated municipal monuments. The historic cityscape also includes an old canal and remains of the fortifications. The Benschopperpoort is one of the two city gates. Today, all that remains of Kasteel IJsselstein is the Loyertoren, dating from the 16th century. Together, these diverse traces show the variety of the city’s architectural heritage.

The Oude Nicolaaskerk was built around 1307 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas in 1310. The Sint Nicolaasbasiliek has a different architectural history: this three-aisled Neo-Gothic hall church was built to the design of architect Wilhelm Victor Alfred Tepe and opened for use in 1887. The basilica is also home to the Marian image Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Eiteren, which has been an object of veneration and devotion for centuries. Every year, it is carried at the head of a procession through IJsselstein; check the dates before your trip. The tower by Italian architect Pasqualini is considered the first Renaissance building in the northern Netherlands.

Museum, garden and milling craft

Museum IJsselstein tells the story of the city not in a traditional chronological order, but through emotional themes. Its changing exhibitions each focus on a current social issue. This offers a different way to explore the city’s history from the buildings in the historic centre. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The Sint Nicolaasbasiliek is open daily from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Opening hours may change, so check the current times before your visit.

Korenmolen De Windotter was built in 1732 and is a working windmill where grain is milled and flour is made. The mill shop offers a wide range of products for anyone who wants to bake their own bread, cakes, pizza, biscuits and other treats. This is a way to connect the historic building with the local milling craft.

The Historische Kruidentuin in Vestingplantsoen is inspired by historic monastery gardens. The historic green setting also includes a playground suitable for children with and without disabilities. These details add cultural and family-friendly points of interest to the architectural history, without requiring them to be part of a particular walking route.

Cycling route, water and sightseeing tours

The Hollandse IJssel cycling route follows the river’s different landscapes and passes through the fortified town of IJsselstein. Check the route details before setting off. You can go canoeing or stand-up paddleboarding on the IJssel; check local conditions when planning your activity. The cycling route and water activities offer different ways to spend your time here.

For 2026, sightseeing tours are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays through 31 October inclusive. They pass numerous monuments, including both Sint-Nicolaaskerken and Korenmolen De Windotter. Check the dates before making a tour a firm part of your travel plans. You can then plan your time in IJsselstein according to whether you would most like to experience the historic architecture, the museum, the windmill or outdoor activities.
