If you are considering Pernis as a holiday apartment destination, you can plan your stay around three specific questions: Which aspects of local history interest you, which nature activities would you like to include, and would you like to include a connection to central Rotterdam? Pernis lies among the harbors and has retained the character of a former farming and fishing village. Since the Eemhaven was built in 1946, the village has been completely surrounded by harbors.

Local history in buildings and town layout

The Oudheidkamer Pernis preserves the village’s past and keeps it alive: it collects and displays material about Pernis and its surroundings. The Museumwoning offers a different perspective. It shows a living room and a small kitchen from the 1930s. The kitchen is furnished as it would have been in a dike house between 1930 and 1950; most of the furnishings were donated by Pernis residents.

Individual buildings also reflect different periods. The tower of the Hervormde Kerk is a brick structure dating from the second half of the 15th century; the bell was cast by P. Oostens in 1672. The 18th-century Van Geslacht op Geslacht farm comprises a house and an adjoining barn beneath a tiled hipped roof.

The village’s development can also be read in its layout: buildings began to appear along the Pastoriedijk in the 15th century; together, the Pastoriedijk and Ring enclose a circular area. The Oud and Nieuw Pernis polders already formed the core of Pernis. The former fishing harbor tells the story of a later change. Once the pride of the village, it was filled in and is now a parking lot.

Nature garden and trails

Het Groene Woud Pernis nature garden offers a range of activities. On the barefoot path, you walk without shoes over different surfaces. Visitors can pick flowers in the flower-picking garden and harvest vegetables in the vegetable garden, accompanied and assisted by staff. If you plan to visit the barefoot path, check the current visiting conditions beforehand.

For a longer hike, the Rotterdams Ommelandpad leads all the way to Pernis. The route is about 150 kilometers long, ends in the village, and can be walked in its entirety. A cycling tour through the Port of Rotterdam can also pass through Pernis: one route option of about 50 kilometers runs along the Waalhaven and through the Benelux Tunnel. This gives you hiking and cycling routes of very different lengths to choose from.

Swimming and connections to Rotterdam

Zwembad Pernis has a 25-meter pool with five lanes for lap swimming, a shallower leisure area, and a paddling pool for toddlers. If the swimming pool is important to your stay, check the current operating details before your visit.

Pernis P+R is located next to Pernis metro station on the edge of the village. Take Metro Line C towards De Terp to reach central Rotterdam from Pernis in about 18 minutes. The journey time is an estimate; for a specific trip, check the timetable.
