Discover Hoek van Holland through its beach, dune trails and traces of the Atlantic Wall. The beach is 250 metres wide and 3.5 kilometres long. These dimensions can help you decide whether beach time should be the focus of your stay. There are also many different options for activities, nature and culture, from designated water sports zones to historical exhibitions.

Beach and Water Sports

The beach section at Rechtestraat is designated as a sports beach. You can play sports there all year round. Sailing, kitesurfing, surfing and surf kayaking are permitted in the designated water sports zones under the municipal beach zoning rules. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, follow the relevant zoning.

Metro line B of the Hoekse Lijn stops at Hoek van Holland Strand station, right by Zeeplein, the main beach square. This makes the beach square a useful landmark when travelling by metro; check the timetable before your journey.

Beach accessibility is also worth considering when planning your visit. Paved paths are suitable for wheelchairs and the Wensambulance. During the beach season, Jutter beach wheelchairs are available at Badweg and can be used free of charge during this period. Confirm the current conditions of use before your visit. The local EHBO association also rents Mobi Chairs, which can go into the water, as well as the electric beach wheelchair De Bug. Check the rental arrangements before you travel.

Dune Trails and Longer Routes

The Zeeheldenroute is about three kilometres long and runs through Roomse Duin and Hoekse bosjes to the beach. The route description notes changes to the markings for 2026; check them before setting out. A much longer option for cyclists is the approximately 30-kilometre route “Fietsen langs sporen van de Atlantikwall bij Hoek van Holland”, which follows traces of the Atlantic Wall. Check the route conditions before cycling. The two routes offer different experiences: the Zeeheldenroute connects the green areas mentioned above with the beach, while the cycling route follows traces of military history.

Vinetaduin encompasses a varied dune landscape with dune scrub, dune grassland and areas of shifting sand. It is part of Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen and has been part of the Kapittelduinen-Solleveld Natura 2000 site since 2007. Species found there include sand lizards, natterjack toads, roe deer and bats. Access is restricted to protect these sensitive habitats; guided excursions are announced separately. Take this restriction into account when planning your time in nature.

The Atlantic Wall and Cultural History

For the German armed forces, Hoek van Holland was the most important Atlantic Wall site in the Netherlands because of its access to the port of Rotterdam. The fortress, strategically located at the mouth of the Nieuwe Waterweg, was intended to protect the port against a possible Allied invasion. The Atlantic Wall Museum presents the history through authentic objects, dioramas, information panels and images. A dedicated bunker cinema also screens a documentary of its own.

Fort 1881 offers another historical focus. It is the best-preserved armoured fort in the Netherlands and was built towards the end of the 19th century to protect the Nieuwe Waterweg. If you are interested in culture beyond military history, Museum RockArt offers a different perspective: it collects, manages, preserves, digitises and presents national and international musical heritage from the 1950s to the present day.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

The Hoeksveer is a ferry for cyclists and passengers between Hoek van Holland and the Maasvlakte. The ferry operates seasonally; check the timetable for your travel dates. This lets you choose activities based on your planned itinerary without turning the different themes into a fixed tour.
