Nature, local history and a range of leisure activities shape a stay in Wierden. At Wierdense Veld, permanent protection as a Natura 2000 site goes hand in hand with seasonal grazing: from mid-May to 1 November, a flock of around 700 sheep grazes there. Travelers who include nature in their plans will find a specific seasonal connection here, as well as a landscape shaped by its use.

Wierden on foot: landscape and local history

The 6-kilometre “Cultuurhistorisch Wierden” circular route passes through a distinctive Moluccan neighbourhood and a characteristic landscape. It starts at Wierden NS railway station and is marked with yellow directional arrows and a footprint logo. The distance, starting point and route markers answer different planning questions: they tell you how long the walk is, where to begin and how to find your way along the route. The walk therefore takes in both the townscape and the surrounding landscape.

The “Katong Kemana” monument is another part of Wierden’s history. It was unveiled after the renovation of the Moluccan neighbourhood; the name freely translates as “Where do we go?” Wierden is an old esdorp (an agricultural village built around communal fields) with a lively past. The monument and the circular route highlight different aspects of local history, and are not the same attraction: the route passes through the Moluccan neighbourhood, while the monument is connected to the neighbourhood and its renovation.

Het Lageveld: water, trails and cycling

Het Lageveld has a natural recreational lake with a large sandy beach, a deeper surfing pond, and a shallow bathing and children’s pond. There is a separate paddling pool for the youngest visitors; the children’s pond has a maximum depth of 80 centimetres. A raft ferry takes you to an island. The water areas therefore differ in depth and facilities: alongside the deeper surfing pond, there are shallow pools and a dedicated paddling pool. The raft ferry adds another clearly defined option at the lake.

There are also different options for walking and cycling: hiking trails run through the adjacent forest, and there is access to the recreational cycling network. For mountain bikers, route length is a useful point of comparison. A 4.6-kilometre singletrack runs through Het Lageveld; it is part of a 35-kilometre mountain bike course around Wierden. The 4.6 kilometres refer to the singletrack, while the 35 kilometres refer to the larger course. This puts the two figures in context without confusing them as the same route length.

Cultural history and archaeology at De Barkel

Pleisterplaats De Barkel is an information point for cultural history and archaeology. Using modern techniques, it presents the history of the area around Landgoed de Barkel. A reconstruction of a burial mound stands in an attractively landscaped garden with historic planting. Here, the past is presented in a different way from the circular route or the monument: the focus is on interpreting the history of the landscape and archaeological themes. Pleisterplaats De Barkel also offers locally made products, including homemade apple pie.

These differences can help you choose where to stay: seasonal grazing is a highlight at Wierdense Veld, the circular route connects the townscape with the landscape, and Het Lageveld offers water-based activities and cycling. Those particularly interested in cultural history and archaeology will find a dedicated thematic experience at Pleisterplaats De Barkel. This makes it possible to explore Wierden according to specific interests, rather than combining every attraction into one route.
