Enter is best explored through two local themes: the history of wooden shoes and the Zompen on the Regge. Museums and exhibition venues tell the stories of craftsmanship and shipping; on the water, you can choose from trips on a Zomp, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. The town thus combines cultural attractions with ways to explore the Twents Reggedal.

Wooden shoes, shipping and local history

The Klompenmuseum Sköpke is dedicated to the history of Enter wooden shoes, the clog makers and their tools. The museum is closed until the end of 2026 for renovation. If you plan to visit after that, check access in advance.

Zompen are also part of Enter’s history. The Zompenmuseum describes the Regt door Zee, built in 1875, as the last Zomp built in Enter and connects the vessel with skipper Jans ten Berge. Ontdek&Doe offers another perspective on the craft: the history of the Enterse Zompen is presented in an accessible way at this educational and interactive centre. The Enterse Waarf combines a shipyard for Enterse Zompen with an exhibition space.

Another striking attraction in the town is the world’s largest wooden shoe, carved from a single piece of wood. Another exhibition area at the Oudheidkamer BuisJan features a sweet shop from grandmother’s day. Visitors can also dress up in authentic farmers’ clothing. The exhibits thus range from wooden shoe making and shipping to glimpses of everyday life in the past.

On the Regge aboard a Zomp

The Enterse Zomp is a flat-bottomed, oak vessel about 12 metres long, with a jib and a mainsail. It is suitable for shallow water. Trips on the Regge aboard an authentically reconstructed Zomp depart from De Waarf in Enter. During the sailing season, visitors can board an authentic Enterse Zomp there for an approximately one-hour trip without booking in advance. Check the current timetable before making plans, as trips are offered seasonally.

Those wishing to explore the Twents Reggedal on the water can choose between an Enterse Zomp, a canoe and a SUP board. The Zomp trip’s approximate one-hour duration provides a useful guide for planning your time. Canoeing and SUP are other ways to experience the area from the water.

Walks and events

There is also a named starting point for exploring the area on foot: the Wisselmaat Midden Regge walking route begins at TOP de Wisselmaat on Enterweg, between Wierden and Enter. From the starting point, it follows the red markers of the Wandelnetwerk Twente. Check the markings locally in case the trail network has changed.

The Enterse Dagen regularly includes a parade in its programme. If you want to plan your stay around the event, check the dates for each edition. This lets you combine the cultural side of your trip with the exhibitions, a possible Zomp trip or the walking route, without assuming that all activities follow the same schedule.
