When visiting Stegeren, you’ll find a range of options combining walking trails, the Vecht landscape and local history. The Boswachterspad Arriër-Esch starts at Café Restaurant De Bootsman, Coevorderweg 19, 7737 PE Stegeren. The five walking trails from Stegeren also start at Coevorderweg 19. This address is a specific landmark for the walking options; you can distinguish the routes by their stated distances.

Walking Trails and a Cycling Route along the Vecht

The yellow route from Stegeren is a flat, 4.7 km circular walk. It runs mostly through the forest over unpaved surfaces. Parts of it follow sections of Wolfveldseweg and Stegerdijk. So, in addition to the distance, the circular route, terrain and surface are all features of this walk.

The Stuwenroute has a different focus: it crosses the Vecht at the weir between Junne and Stegeren. Near the hamlet of Stegeren, it can be extended with a circular walk of around 3 km. This passes through the former Esdorp and over centuries-old pastureland along the Vecht. For planning purposes, these are two distinct route features: the river crossing at the weir and the additional loop with its own distance.

Junner Koeland and Its Trails

Junner Koeland lies between the hamlets of Arriën, Junne and Stegeren. Today, it is a nature reserve of around 100 hectares managed by Staatsbosbeheer. More than 70 bird species breed in the area; the best place to observe them is from a birdwatching hide.

Junner Koeland has a 10 km walking trail and a shorter 2.5 km walk. Another route to Junner Koeland, around 3 km long, starts on Stegerdijk in Stegeren. If you’re choosing by distance, there are three specific options: 2.5 km, 4.7 km and 10 km.

Esdorp and Historic Landscape

Stegeren originally developed as an Esdorp and is mentioned in 1244 as “boerscop Steygeren”. The scattered farmsteads are connected by Stegerdijk; at the farm ’n Oeverdincken, the road ends in a large loop. The yellow route follows sections of this road, and therefore part of the local road network.

Stegerveld also has a long history as a landscape: it was once an extensive heath and bog where sheep grazed and peat was cut. Dozens of prehistoric burial mounds are still visible in the landscape around Stegeren. Staatsbosbeheer restored the burial mounds at Calsum in 1999. Taken together, these details show different aspects of the landscape’s history: its former uses and the burial mounds that remain visible today.
