The Wandelrondje Wijhe combines nature and culture, passing several municipal monuments with information boards and QR codes. If you are looking for a walking route with a stated length, “Kunst en cultuur snuiven in Wijhe” is an approximately 4.7-kilometre route. You can therefore choose between following the circular route’s themes and using the approximate distance as your guide.

Monuments and history in Wijhe

The municipal Rijksmonumentenlijst, updated in December 2025, lists the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk Nicolaaskerk at Kerkstraat 15 and De Waag at Langstraat 48–50. Both are specific stops for anyone interested in the town’s historic heritage.

The Historische Vereniging Wijhe shares the history and cultural heritage of Wijhe and is based at Langstraat 52. On the second Saturday of each month from September to May, it holds genealogy open days. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., volunteers answer questions about family history research. The 2026 exhibition focuses on Boerenbont tableware from the private collection of Riek Ruitenberg and the cultural stories behind everyday objects; it will be on display from 27 April 2026. Check the latest exhibition dates before visiting.

Individual buildings also tell stories of different periods and functions. Built in 1703, the Wijhese Molen is considered the oldest octagonal mill in the province of Overijssel. De Notedop is said to be the smallest house in Wijhe: A.W.C. Keijser built it onto his house in 1869 and set up a sub-post office there. The French School in Wijhe was founded in 1862. The artwork De Marskramer evokes the town’s former trade and lively past.

Trails and historic landscapes

At Landgoed De Gelder, near Wijhe, landscape and architectural history come together. The estate covers more than 200 hectares and has largely preserved its avenues, ditches and walking trails. Other historic features include the remains of a demolished Havezate, a moat, a bridge, woodland and numerous rhododendrons. De Gelder offers a different focus from the monuments in town: here, the emphasis is on the preserved landscape and the estate’s history.

The Duursche Waarden lie near Wijhe, along the IJssel. This water-rich, marshy area is managed for nature development; Scottish Highland cattle help maintain the landscape. The area also has an observation tower and birdwatching hides. Workshops, talks and excursions are held regularly. The remains of an old brickworks add an industrial history dimension to this natural area, including a flame kiln, a ring kiln and a 40-metre-high chimney.

Another part of the area’s natural history links Wijhe to the flora of its old dikes. Veermans Hof IJsselflora was established to rescue and preserve this flora. Together with the landscape conservation areas along the IJssel, the garden offers a distinctive way to experience nature around Wijhe.

Getting around

The TOP Wijhe on Veerweg provides information about the area and parking. Loswal Wijhe has 20 motorhome pitches and a marina for visitors. It is close to the Wijhe–Heerde ferry and within a short walk of the town centre. If you plan to take the ferry, check the timetable in advance.

To decide whether Wijhe is right for your stay, you can weigh up different options: historic buildings and cultural trails in town, or nature and landscape destinations near Wijhe. The trails, dates and visitor activities mentioned above also provide practical details to help you plan.
