Wesepe lies amid pastureland and is surrounded by forests and country estates. The area is well suited to hiking and cycling; its historical highlights range from the Nicolaaskerk to the former Ommen–Deventer railway line. If you are planning a trip, you can explore nature trails and local history as separate themes.

Landscape Around Wesepe

The Boxbergen Estate is part of the landscape, with numerous types of trees growing on its grounds. The Boxbergen-Lankhorst Estate lies west of Wesepe and covers more than 370 hectares. Pastures, forests and estates offer different landscape features to explore in the area.

Trails and Route Choices

The “Ommetje Wesepe” trail passes through the varied countryside around the village, among pastures, forests and estates. The starting point is at Ds. E. Kreikenlaan 1 in Wesepe; from there, the route follows the blue arrows of the walking trail network. This gives you both a specific starting point and directions to follow: first head to the starting point, then follow the markers.

If you want to compare routes by length, two specific distances are available: “Haarbelten,” around Wesepe, is 7.1 km long, while “Rondje Heeten,” between Wesepe and Heeten, is 5.1 km. Rondje Heeten is 2 km shorter, and the routes also differ in the places they cover. One runs around Wesepe; the other is associated with both villages.

The “12 kernen route” is one of the cycling routes in and around Wesepe. For the Ommetje, the starting point and the blue arrows of the walking trail network are specified. Check the route information again before setting out.

Church and Railway History

The Nicolaaskerk in Wesepe was first mentioned in 1348. The historic church contains a baptismal font made of Bentheim sandstone, dating approximately to the 13th century. The two dates refer to different things: 1348 is the church’s first recorded mention, while the baptismal font is dated only approximately. This distinguishes the history of the building from the dating of a single item of its furnishings.

The Oude Spoorpad also preserves a specific trace of the past: in Wesepe, it follows the course of the former Ommen–Deventer railway line into the center. A monument along the path commemorates the former Deventer–Ommen OLDO railway line. The history of the Nicolaaskerk and the former railway connection are therefore two distinct topics. The route names list the same two places in a different order: Ommen–Deventer for the former railway route, and Deventer–Ommen for the monument to the former OLDO railway line. This makes the naming clear: both refer to the same endpoints and therefore to the same historic connection, rather than to different connections.
