Enschede combines cultural venues and urban history with natural areas of varied character.

Urban History and Culture

Volkspark Enschede was established in 1872 as a recreational area for textile workers in Enschede and is the oldest public park in the Netherlands. Events held there include pop festivals, art events and fairs. This brings together its historical origins and a range of event types. If a particular event determines your travel dates, check its schedule in advance.

Wilminktheater and Muziekcentrum Enschede is an important cultural institution for the municipality of Enschede and its surrounding area. The organisation operates four buildings with six stages in the centre of Enschede: Wilminktheater, Muziekcentrum, Grote Kerk and De Kleine Willem. If you are interested in a particular venue or programme, check the latest information before your visit.

Since the Vuurwerkramp, Roombeek has become known as a neighbourhood of creativity and resilience. Huis Zonnebeek has a different historical connection: it was the former home of textile manufacturer Jan Bernard van Heek and his American wife, Edwina Burr Ewing, and is a Rijksmonument (national heritage site). Together, these places illustrate different aspects of the city’s history, from the textile workforce to the world of a textile manufacturer.

Natural Areas and Walking

Vliegbasis Twenthe has 130 hectares of natural and recreational areas that are open to the public. Het Smalenbroek is an estate of about 85 hectares south of Enschede. Open areas alternate there with forests and wooded strips. Nearby Aamsveen is a peatland area on the Dutch-German border, south of Enschede. It includes cut-over raised bog, wet carr woodland, heathland, peat cuttings and nutrient-poor grassland. These landscape features differ markedly from the open areas and wooded strips of Het Smalenbroek.

A signposted walking trail starts at the main entrance to Hof Espelo. Allow about one hour and 15 minutes for the walk. This approximate duration gives you a useful guide when planning a walk as part of your trip.

City Walk and Getting Around

The Enschede city walk takes you through beautiful, historic and lesser-known places in the city centre. A guided historical city walk is offered every Saturday; check the schedule before your trip. Enschede railway station has good public transport connections and is within walking distance of the city centre. This can be particularly useful for your arrival and for a stay focused on the city centre.

Visitor centre Het Lammerinkswönner also offers a specific connection to nature and culture. You can reach the centre via the main entrance to Ledeboerpark on Hengelosestraat; it is about 200 metres further along on the right-hand side of the path. There, NatuurEducatie of the municipality of Enschede offers nature education on quality of life and sustainability, cultural history, and flora and fauna. If a particular topic is important to your visit, check the latest information in advance.

When choosing a hotel in Enschede, you can first plan your trip around your interests: urban history, cultural institutions and events, or natural areas and walking. This helps you decide what to focus on before choosing accommodation.
