St. Jacobus de Meerdere Church, Lonnekermolen and Lonnekerberg offer different ways to explore history and landscape in Dorp Lonneker. There is also a music pavilion used seasonally and a route whose boundary stones recall former commons. When planning, it is worth considering buildings, summer music events and paths through the landscape as distinct points of interest.

Buildings with their own history

St. Jacobus de Meerdere Church is a neo-Gothic community monument dating from 1911–1912. As a three-aisled cruciform church, it can accommodate 800 worshippers. Its style, floor plan and size describe different aspects of the same building: the neo-Gothic classification identifies its architectural direction, while the cruciform shape, three aisles and capacity give a sense of its scale. Visitors interested in religious architecture can consider these features together, rather than noting only the year it was built.

Lonnekermolen offers a second historical time span. Its predecessor burned down in 1847; the present mill began operating in 1851. The dates tell a sequence: the predecessor’s fire was followed by the operation of the present mill. Together with the church, built in 1911–1912, they provide a comparison between the history of a 19th-century mill and a community monument from the early 20th century.

Music in summer

Muziekkoepel Lonneker is a community monument dating from 1920. Known as Lonneker Open Podium, it is used as a music stage during the summer months. Programme details may vary; if a concert is the deciding factor in choosing when to travel, check the latest dates before planning. This way, the seasonal nature of the venue is taken into account when choosing when to visit.

Lonnekerberg: landscape and paths

Lonnekerberg is a 141-hectare nature area in Overijssel and forms the southern part of the Enschede–Oldenzaal moraine complex. This allows the natural area to be considered both on its own and in a broader geological context. The Jufferbeek flows through the wooded area of Lonnekerberg; rare plant and butterfly species are found along its banks. The view thus extends from the geological formation to a specific habitat along the stream. There are numerous walking and cycling paths around the area. Visitors who want to spend time outdoors can explore the surroundings on foot or by bike.

Boundary stones and route options

The Markestenenroute Enschede offers another cultural and historical perspective. It follows the boundaries of former commons, including Lonneker, and passes existing or re-erected boundary stones. Its theme is therefore the former demarcation of boundaries, made tangible by the stones. Most of the route follows cycle paths, most of which are paved. Shorter options are marked with orange dotted lines. As route markings can change, it is worth checking the route provider’s latest information before setting off. When choosing what to focus on, bear in mind that the Markestenenroute is about boundary history, while the area around Lonnekerberg has numerous walking and cycling paths.
