Nederhorst den Berg offers a range of interests for a stay: nature watching in the Horstermeerpolder, water activities at Spiegelplas, marked walking and cycling routes, and buildings and places of remembrance. You can give these different themes the emphasis that suits your interests, rather than treating them as a single route. The landscape and water offer a different side of the village from the mill, Kasteel Nederhorst and the war memorial.

Polder landscape and Spiegelplas

The Horstermeerpolder is a nature-rich polder landscape located where a lake once stood. You may see, among other birds, great egrets and mute swans; sightings vary by season. The Radioweg offers a good view of the nature area. This is a way to experience the landscape in its own right, whether or not there are birds to observe at the time.

Spiegelplas offers a different focus. It reaches depths of up to 45 metres in some places and can be accessed by land and by water. In summer, you can swim at the bathing areas near the Googpad, at the lake and at the Speelvijver Spiegelplas. Local conditions may vary. There is also a designated diving area on the north side; check the local conditions before using it. Swimming is therefore described as a seasonal activity, while local usage conditions are important for the diving area.

Plan walking and cycling routes

From the Nederhorst den Berg starting point, you can take several marked circular walks. Three different landscapes can be experienced in the village. The Bergse Beestenpad is marked along the paths with corten steel posts—a distinctive feature that makes the route easy to recognise.

There are also specific landmarks to help you find the start of a route. Two free parking spaces for the Bommelsteinroute are available on Voorstraat. Local parking conditions may change, so check them in advance if you are arriving by car. The Erfgoedrondje Nederhorst den Berg cycling tour starts in the village centre. The Doortraproute Nederhorst den Berg starts at Restaurant Spiegelhuys, Dammerweg 3, 1394 GM. Restaurant details may change, so check the starting point before setting out.

Mill, castle and remembrance

The polder mill at Ankeveensepad 9 is octagonal and was built in 1793 as the polder mill of the Stichtsch-Ankeveensche Polder. Its shape, year of construction and address give the mill a clear historical profile. Kasteel Nederhorst dates back further: the medieval castle was founded around 1300. It began as a simple residential tower surrounded by a moat. The majestic Louis XIV-style entrance gate stands out from the road.

Another part of the village’s history is recorded at the war memorial. It commemorates three residents who lost their lives during acts of war near the Willibrordkerk during the years of occupation. The mill, castle and memorial represent different aspects of history: the use of the polder landscape, early architectural history and remembrance of the victims of war.
