Around Schagerbrug, expansive polders, sea air, dunes and a nearby beach shape the landscape. The village also offers trail connections, the Grote Sloot and historic buildings. This means there is a range of themes to explore, from cycling and walking tours to waterways and the history of the Zijpe Polder.

Landscape and routes

Schagerbrug is connected to the cycling junction network at junction 35 and to the national walking route network at trailhead 04. The Westfriese Omringdijk Route is another clearly identified route: it runs for 126 kilometres through Schagerbrug and is fully signposted in both directions. This means there are numbered junctions for cycling and walking routes as well as a long route with its own name and a specified total length. The area around Schagerbrug is suitable for cycling and walking tours. Expansive polders define the landscape; dunes and a nearby beach are also part of it.

Surfing on the North Sea and horse riding through the dune area are also possible activities nearby. These add further ways to experience the landscape alongside cycling and walking tours.

Waterways in the Zijper Polder

The Grote Sloot runs from north to south through the Zijper Polder. The villages of Burgerbrug, Sint Maartensbrug and Oudesluis, among others, lie along its banks. The Grote Sloot can be reached by boat via the Stolpen-Kolhorn Canal. Another access route is via the Noordhollands Kanaal at Zijpersluis; very low boats may be suitable for this route. At junction 17, the Grote Sloot is also connected to the national sloep network, and landing stages have recently been installed for this purpose.

In summer, the Grote Sloot takes on another dimension: it becomes part of an art route. This seasonal connection with art adds a cultural theme to the waterways, while the boat access points and connection to the sloep network highlight the area’s waterways.

Windmills, church and regional history

Schagerbrug is home to the Zijper Molen O-N, a windmill dating from the 18th century. The village also has a Reformed church in the Waterstaat style. The two buildings represent different aspects of local history: the mill is identified by its century, while the church combines the Reformed tradition with the Waterstaat style.

The Zijper Museum focuses on the history of the Zijpe Polder. Its permanent exhibition presents this history through objects, maps, films and animations. The museum also holds the Niestadt Collection and the Collectie Ter Beziens, which includes unique historical photographic material.

The museum also serves as an information centre. Its resources include an extensive library, numerous digital sources and online images. The museum’s offerings therefore include both the permanent exhibition on the history of the polder and its collections and information resources. If you are considering Schagerbrug for a stay, you can compare its different highlights: the landscape and tours, the waterways associated with the Grote Sloot, or the history of the village and polder.
