Get to know Schagen through its architectural history, West Frisian traditions and routes through the surrounding area. Its cultural attractions offer a variety of experiences: the Boerderij-en Rijtuigmuseum Vreeburg combines a 17th-century urban farm with a glimpse into life around 1900. The Grote Kerk and Slot Schagen point to further chapters in the city’s history. Timing also matters when planning your visit if you want to experience the summer folklore.
City history in buildings and museums
The Boerderij-en Rijtuigmuseum Vreeburg is a 17th-century urban farm, fully restored in the old style, with a carriage museum in Schagen’s old town. Today, the farm serves as a local history museum and offers a glimpse into life and living conditions around 1900. The history of the building and the depiction of everyday life in a later period are presented side by side here.
The Grote Kerk was built between 1895 and 1897 in the Neo-Gothic style, based on a design by architect J.A.G. van der Steur. It is considered a rare example of this architectural style in a Protestant church. The Sint-Christoforuskerk is associated with another historical date: it was consecrated on Sunday, 21 October 1883, by Bishop C.J.M. Bottemanne of Haarlem. Together, the two churches add different dates and contexts to the story of Schagen’s architecture.
Slot Schagen also has a long history. Around 1440, the first Lord of Schagen had an existing stone house converted into a square moated castle. The rebuilt Slot Schagen is also a stop on the “Door het gezellige Schagen” route. This connects the architectural history with a walk past numerous historic buildings.
West Frisian folklore in summer
During the summer months, the Westfriese Folklore procession passes through the centre of Schagen on ten consecutive Thursdays. It features historic vehicles and people from Schagen wearing authentic West Frisian dress. The regular schedule over several Thursdays makes the event a special seasonal highlight; it’s worth checking the dates when planning your visit.
At the Westfriese Folklore market, typical West Frisian products are sold on Gedempte Gracht and Nieuwstraat. The procession and market give the folklore both a parade through the centre and a connection to these streets. If you want to plan your stay around this experience, the event date is an important factor in your choice.
Routes on foot and on the water
For walks around the city, “Door het gezellige Schagen” passes numerous historic buildings and the rebuilt Slot Schagen. “Wandelen door Schagen,” on the other hand, follows the Schagervaart to Tolke. The two descriptions focus on different things: one on Schagen’s historic buildings, the other on the route along the water to Tolke.
The “Bloemenvelden route” circles Schagen, passing grassland and flower fields. During the flowering season, the flowers create a striking display of colour. This seasonal view of the landscape differs from the historic buildings in town; outside the flowering season, the route itself remains a useful point of reference.
You can canoe through Schagen on the “Kanoroute Schagen.” Several launch points make a circular route possible, and the route offers views of nature along the way. This is a different way to discover Schagen from the walking routes mentioned above. For orientation in the town area, there is also the Recreatiehaven Schagen, about a 500-metre walk from the city centre.
An overnight stay connected to the city’s history
Slot Schagen also connects the city’s history with a place to stay: it can be booked as accommodation with breakfast served at the table. If you’re looking for hotels in Schagen, you can first consider whether the historic attractions, seasonal folklore or a route on foot or by canoe is the deciding factor for your trip. The attractions and routes mentioned differ in theme and mode of travel; they don’t have to be treated as one combined programme.
