The Opmeer Agricultural Show, held all day on the first Monday in August, provides a clear reason to visit. There are also marked walking routes, a seasonal polder route and the opportunity to explore the surrounding area from the water. When planning your trip, the options differ not only by theme but also by route length and mode of transport: the selection ranges from routes in the town centre to routes of more than 30 kilometres.
The Agricultural Show as a reason to visit
The Opmeer Agricultural Show has been held all day on the first Monday in August for more than a century. It showcases the agricultural sector to a large audience. For the 2026 edition, the organiser described an agricultural fair featuring shows, competitions, demonstrations and family activities. The specific programme may change from year to year; if the show is the reason for your trip, check the details for the relevant edition.
From marked routes to polder trails
Several walking routes are signposted in the centre of Opmeer, and the town hall is one of their starting points. You can also walk in Opmeer’s village centres and surrounding countryside. To choose a specific route, it is worth looking at two options of different lengths. The 13-kilometre “Landscape and Nature” walking loop focuses on nature in Opmeer. The seasonal Opmeer Tulip Route covers more than 30 kilometres through the polders of the municipalities of Opmeer and Koggenland. It can be completed only on foot or by bicycle. The difference is clear when choosing a route: the 13-kilometre loop is less than half the length of the Tulip Route, and the latter can also be completed by bicycle.
Another route has a different focus: the Doortraproute Opmeer briefly passes through the hamlet of de Lage Hoek into the neighbouring municipality of Hollands Kroon, then follows the Weelpolder near Aartswoud on the way back. The short detour into Hollands Kroon makes crossing the municipal boundary a distinctive feature of this route. Route conditions can change, so check this route before setting out.
Explore by boat
If you would rather explore the surrounding area from the water, you can rent a boat from Botenverhuur Opmeer. When you rent a boat, you receive a map showing suitable routes; route selection is part of the rental offer. If this outing is important to your plans, check current availability in advance.
Remembering the crew
The Short Stirling Monument in Opmeer commemorates the crew of an Allied Short Stirling bomber that crashed on 11 May 1941. The monument consists of a propeller blade from the bomber, a V-shaped steel frame, a plaque and a brick plinth. It thus connects the precisely identified historical event with the clearly described components of the memorial.
