Around Limmen’s cemetery on Zuidkerkenlaan are the Hortus Bulborum, the old school, and the old teacher’s house. This neighborhood offers a first impression of how flower bulb cultivation and local history are visible side by side in Limmen. A historical museum, notable buildings, and routes of varying lengths offer further insights.
Local History in Several Layers
In southeastern Limmen, De Museale Hoek comprises the school complex, the Protestantse Kerk with its churchyard, Ons Huis, and the Hortus Bulborum. The Stichting Oud Limmen Museum is housed in a historic school building dating from 1862. Its collections focus on Limmen’s history and flower bulb cultivation—two themes that also recur in the local landscape beyond the museum.
The Protestantse Kerk at Zuidkerkenlaan 25 is a single-nave church with an incorporated late Romanesque tower. The building may date from the 15th century. The first written mention of the church in Limmen appears in a property register dated before 800. “Limbon” is the historical form of the place name. Thus, the church brings together an uncertain dating of the present building and a much earlier written reference to the place.
Molen De Mol also tells a story of several building phases: it was rebuilt in 1987 as a tribute to the original De Mol grain mill, dating from 1587. The original mill burned down in 1916. Another historical landmark is the Oorlogsmonument Schoolweg Limmen. It marks the exact crash site of a Mosquito fighter aircraft from the Canadian 418 Squadron on September 8, 1944.
The Historisch Limmen timeline offers another historical perspective. It opened on April 18, 2026, consists of 26 panels, and traces Limmen’s history. Its account begins at around 2750 BC. Check visitor access before your visit.

Flower Bulb Cultivation and Seasonal Experiences
In spring, the surrounding flower bulb fields fill the landscape around Limmen with color. In the Hortus Bulborum, a flower bulb garden and museum, visitors can explore the garden with an expert, discover different tulips such as Rembrandt varieties, and learn more about the garden’s history and flower bulb cultivation. The Hortus Bulborum was founded in 1928 by Boschman and De Mol. The availability of guided visits may vary seasonally.
There are also dedicated occasions for culture and local brewing. Since 1974, Limmen Cultuur has organized performances, concerts, lectures, and exhibitions at various locations in Limmen; individual programs and venues vary by season. Brouwerij Dampegheest offers brewery tours lasting one to one and a half hours for groups of at least ten people, with the option to sample various Dampegheest beers.
