Discover Akersloot through its waterside landscape and cultural heritage. The Alkmaardermeer is at the heart of the village; paths along the water and meadows, a cycling route with ferries and mills, and historic buildings each offer something different. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you would rather spend time outdoors or explore the history of mills, churches, and polders.
Waterways and landscape
The path along the Akerslootse Polder offers views of water and meadows. For a walk with a fixed starting point, there is Rondje Akersloot: the 6 km route begins at the Oude Kerk Akersloot and is an educational walking route for primary school-aged children.
The Pontjesroute runs by bicycle along the Alkmaardermeer and Uitgeestermeer, crossing several ferries and passing distinctive mills. Lakes, ferry crossings, and mills shape this route; Rondje Akersloot, by contrast, focuses on the walking route and its starting point in the village. These are different ways to explore the landscape around Akersloot.
Mills, church, and polder history
The Korenmolen De Oude Knegt is a distinctive octagonal Zaan-style grain mill and an example of Dutch mill-building craftsmanship. Anyone interested in architectural styles and craftsmanship will find it a tangible link to the milling tradition. The Hervormde Kerk Akersloot also offers a glimpse into the village’s history: its history dates back to the 13th century.
The church’s history also includes its organ: Abraham Meere built it in 1802, it was brought to Akersloot in 1877, and it was restored in 1972 by Flentrop Orgelbouw of Zaandam. A new church building for the Hervormde Kerk was constructed in the Waterstaat style and put into use in 1837.
Museumgemaal 1879 adds the history of water management to these topics. The monument illustrates how water was once pumped out of the polders. In Akersloot, mill building, church history, and the technical history of the polder sit side by side—a cultural focus distinct from the paths by the water.
Walks and events
Another short outdoor walk is Rondje Museumgemaal Akersloot. Starting in April, it takes place on the first Sunday afternoon of each month at 1:00 p.m. If you want to include this event in your stay, check the details for the relevant month.
The Rock 'n Roll Weekend is also part of Akersloot’s events calendar: it takes place every year in August. Check the dates and program for the relevant year before planning your trip around it. Alongside the enduring cultural and landscape attractions, this gives you a recurring event whose specific schedule depends on the year.
Planning your trip and stay
Akersloot does not have its own train station. From Castricum or Uitgeest stations, you can get there by bicycle in about 20 minutes; travel conditions may vary. If you are considering Akersloot as a place to stay overnight, you can factor this cycling leg into your travel plans. You can also decide what to focus on during your stay: walks, a cycling route with ferries and mills, or the cultural history of the church and polder.
