Schoorl combines extensive trails through nature with historic buildings and art events.

A dune landscape of forests, heathland and sea

The Schoorlse Duinen bring together beach, dunes, forests and heathland. They are the highest dune area in the north of the province of Noord-Holland and a protected Natura 2000 site. A distinctive natural feature is De Kerf: during spring tides and north-westerly storms, North Sea water can flow into the dune valleys behind it. The meeting of sea and dunes here therefore occurs under certain tidal and weather conditions.

Choose your walking and cycling routes

Several walking and cycling routes start at the Buitencentrum Schoorlse Duinen. You can also get information about the nature reserve there. The Schoorlse Duinen have more than 60 kilometres of walking trails and more than 20 kilometres of paved cycling paths. These figures represent different options: an extensive network of trails for walking and paved routes for cycling.

If you would like to combine nature and culture on one route, consider the Schoorlse Duinen audio route. It is available as a 22- or 28-kilometre route. Another option is the family route: it starts at the Buitencentrum and passes through the dunes and the village of Schoorl. Schoorl aan Zee beach lies beyond the Schoorlse Duinen and can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. The longer route is six kilometres longer; both options combine nature and culture but cover different distances.

Special outdoor experiences

The Klimduin is a 51-metre-high dune. Visitors can climb to the top and then run or roll back down. At the edge of the Schoorlse Duinen, Duinmanege van Poelenburgh is located at Duinweg 129 in Schoorl. It offers daily horse rides for different levels.

Buildings, organ and art

The Raadhuisje van Schoorl was built in 1601. The grain mill known as “Kijkduin” dates from 1772. Schoorl is also home to a monumental Baroque organ by Matthias Verhofstad, dating from 1716; it is available for organ concerts.

The art events differ in both format and annual schedule. SchoK is an international art event featuring professional contemporary artists. It has taken place in June in odd-numbered years since 1997. SchiK is an art trail featuring artists from Schoorl, held in even-numbered years. The year is therefore a first clue when planning; for specific upcoming dates, it is worth checking the latest event schedule.
