Egmond Aan Den Hoef combines cultural and historical sites with landscapes and cycling routes: Slotkapel and the surviving foundations of the former Slot op den Hoef tell different chapters of the past; six nature areas lie nearby, and a 43-kilometre cycling route passes through several towns before returning to Egmond. This means you can choose your outings based on culture, nature or cycling.
Slotkapel and Slot op den Hoef
Slotkapel was built next to Slot op den Hoef. It was set on fire in 1573 and restored in 1633. Slot op den Hoef itself was destroyed in 1573 during the Eighty Years’ War; its foundations have survived. The histories of the chapel and castle therefore represent different historical chapters: the chapel was restored, while the castle’s foundations remain.
Hoeve Overslot: Building History and Art
Hoeve Overslot is a monumental 16th-century building in the heart of Egmond Aan Den Hoef. A bust of American painter George Hitchcock, who ran the Art Summer School around 1900, stands in front of the building. Today, Hoeve Overslot is a cultural meeting place for residents of the Egmonden, people from the region and curious visitors from further afield. The programme may change; check the latest information if a particular event is important to your plans.
Polders, Windmill and Dunes
Near Egmond Aan Den Hoef, Natuurmonumenten manages six nature areas between Bergen, Alkmaar and Egmond Aan Den Hoef: Loterijlanden, Broekertjes, Weide Nes, de Voert, Philisteinse Polder and Damlanderpolder. Together, they cover about 85 hectares and are known as the “Weidse Polders”. Wimmenumer Molen still plays a role in the polder’s auxiliary or emergency drainage.
The Wimmenummerduinenroute follows the edge of the dune area, known as the Bollenrand, and then passes through the unspoilt Wimmenummerduinen. The polders and dunes represent different landscape themes, while the windmill adds an aspect of water management.
Cycling Route and Brewery Tour
The 43-kilometre “Zee en meer” cycling route starts in the three Egmonden and passes through Heiloo, Bollendorp, Akersloot, Uitgeest and Castricum before returning to Egmond. Another route, the “Fietsroute door de drie Egmonden”, includes Egmond Aan Den Hoef alongside Egmond Aan Zee and Egmond-Binnen as one of the three named villages. The information answers different planning questions: “Zee en meer” specifies the distance and places along the way, while the Fietsroute focuses on the three villages. Check the route details before setting out if you plan to ride the 43-kilometre route.
Since 2018, Egmond Aan Den Hoef has had a craft brewery where, among other things, the abbey beers Sancti Adalberti are brewed. Visitors can take a tour of Brouwerij Egmond led by knowledgeable staff. As tour arrangements may change, check the latest tour information in advance.
