Achtmaal offers several clear themes for planning your trip: a 2.5-kilometre circular hike, trails through heathland and old forests, and architectural, literary and military history. You can organise your excursions around the activity you want, rather than trying to fit every place into a single itinerary. The options differ not only by theme but also by format: a circular trail, a hiking route between several places and a cycling route each offer different possibilities for planning.

Hiking through forests, heathland and open countryside

The Wallsteijnroute is a 2.5-kilometre circular hiking trail. If you are looking for a specific distance and a circular route, it offers a clearly defined starting point. The Koepelroute has a different focus: it is a hiking trail between Schijf, Achtmaal and Zundert. Your choice therefore also depends on the type of route you want—a measured circular walk or a route connecting three places.

The Oude Buisse Heide lies between Achtmaal and Schijf. There, you can hike through old forests and along meadows, fields, waterways and farmsteads. In De Reten, walking trails cross heathland and new nature areas. The area includes grassland, fields and heathland, and connects the Oude Buisse Heide with Landgoed De Moeren. These landscape features offer different highlights: in the Oude Buisse Heide, forests and waterways are part of the walking experience alongside meadows and fields; De Reten adds heathland and grassland, as well as the connection to Landgoed De Moeren. With a little luck, you may spot a smooth snake in the damp heathland.

Architectural history and literary traces

The Sint Corneliuskerk is a three-aisled hall church with a tower at the front. It was built in 1863 in the traditional craftsmanship style of the Dutch Waterstaat, and a new chancel was added in 1923–1924. The church therefore shows two distinct building phases: the original construction and the later addition of the chancel.

The Wallsteijn estate also has a specific historical connection: Frederik van de Wall, schout of Zundert, laid it out around 1800. Literary history can be encountered on the Gedichtenroute, which passes an old tea pavilion dating from 1840. Henriette Roland Holst used to drink tea there with her guests. The Kerkepad, in turn, follows the historic path she always took on her way to church in Achtmaal. The tea pavilion and church path link the memory of Roland Holst in different ways—through a place where people once met and through the route she used.

Military history and cycling route

The Achtmaal Military History Museum focuses mainly on the liberators of the municipality of Zundert. These include the US 104th Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Timberwolves”. Other topics include the lead-up to the Second World War, the May Days of 1940 and the occupation. The museum therefore looks at liberation and various periods of wartime history, adding a distinct historical perspective to the architectural and literary history.

The 52-kilometre Timberwolves-Fietsroute Zuid also starts at the museum in Achtmaal. It offers a different way to plan your trip than the Wallsteijnroute: here, the focus is a cycling route with a stated total distance, while the latter is a short circular walk. When choosing between the two activities, you can first decide whether you would rather spend your time hiking or cycling.
