In Waspik, churches from different periods sit alongside railway relics and themed routes. On foot, the focus is on historic buildings and local history; the cycle routes connect Waspik with other historic town centres or lead to memorial sites. For planning, the duration of a guided tour and its respective start and end points are useful reference points.

Churches and Town Hall History

St Bartholomeus Church was built by E. de Kruyff between 1837 and 1841 in the Waterstaatskerk architectural style. A much older phase of construction is evident in the late Gothic N.H. Church: its choir dates from the mid-15th century, while its three-aisled pseudo-basilica nave was built later in the same century. The two churches represent different periods of construction and architectural forms in Waspik. “Three-aisled” describes a nave with a central aisle and two side aisles.

The history of the town hall can also be read chronologically. Following the municipal council’s decision to build a new one in 1874, the new Raadhuis Waspik came into use in 1875. The Raadhuis served as the town hall for more than sixty years. In 1938, the municipality of Waspik bought the de Roon family’s villa, converted it and established a new town hall there.

The Liefdegesticht Franciscus van Sales, where education for girls from Waspik began, is part of the local educational heritage. In 1857, a large farmhouse was converted into a convent. On 8 March 1858, eight sisters from the Congregation of Jesus, Mary and Joseph (J.M.J.) began their work in Waspik there.

Railway Relic and Landscape

The Spoorhek is about 144 metres long and dates from 1886. It is the only surviving section of the fence, originally more than 2,000 metres long, along the “Halve Zolenlijn”. This surviving section gives an idea of the scale of the former fence, without confusing the Spoorhek’s approximate length with the original total length.

“Ode aan de zandrug”, a three-dimensional map, offers another perspective on Waspik’s landscape. It reconstructs the local sand ridge using old maps from 1895 and contour lines. The work thus combines cartographic representations with the shape of the landscape. The railway relic and the map emphasise different aspects: one is a surviving piece of railway history, the other a spatial reconstruction of a landscape feature.

Planning Walks and Cycle Routes

The local history society “Op ’t Goede Spoor” offers a guided historic walking tour through the centre of Waspik. It introduces visitors to important sites and buildings. The tour lasts about 1½ to a maximum of 2 hours; the duration may vary depending on the group. The itinerary includes an interior visit to one of the two churches in the centre: the Bartholomeuskerk or the Nederlands Hervormde kerk. When booking, confirm the current arrangements for the tour. The Dorpswandeling Waspik ends at Den Bolder.

For a cycle tour, “Op pad in de historische Langstraat” connects Waspik with the historic town centres of Capelle, Spang, Vrijhoeve, Besoijen, Waalwijk and Baardwijk. Waspik also has four Attentiestenen, which are linked to this cycling and walking route via QR codes. Individual signs may change; check the information before setting off.

A second cycle route passes through Waalwijk, Sprang-Capelle and Waspik and explains 22 monuments and memorials from the Second World War. It can be cycled all year round. Its starting point in Waspik is Cultureel Centrum Den Bolder, Schoolstraat 19, 5165 TR Waspik. Check the route’s current availability before setting off.

Regional Landscape Context

The protected Natura 2000 area Westelijke Langstraat lies between Waalwijk and Waspik. It is a valuable landscape with abundant natural features and cultural history. This regional context adds a landscape perspective to Waspik’s architectural and local history, in which nature and cultural history belong together.
