In Waalwijk, museums and routes tell the story of the region’s renowned leather and footwear production in different ways. The city also offers distinctive architecture and opportunities to explore the city and its surroundings on foot or by bike. To help with your planning, start by deciding what interests you most: learning about the history of the craft, discovering buildings or spending time outdoors?

Leather and Footwear History at the Schoenenkwartier

The Schoenenkwartier brings together a shoe museum, a knowledge centre and a laboratory. Visitors can learn, create and innovate there. The permanent exhibition “How It's Made” explains how leather and shoes are made, using historical machinery and contemporary interactive elements. A second permanent exhibition, “The Story Of The Langstraat”, portrays life in a region traditionally known for leather and footwear production through five main characters.

The collection is also part of the story: the permanent exhibition draws on more than 13,000 shoes and 7,000 objects. Collection figures may change as the collection is updated. The exhibition programme may also change, so check what is currently on display before your visit. This makes it easy to tailor your museum visit to the manufacturing process, regional history or shoe design.

The Waalwijk Leather Route focuses on the leather and footwear industry along a 30-kilometre cycling route. Audio clips explain what cyclists see along the way and share the history, entrepreneurial spirit and innovative strength of the Langstraat. The route is signposted between numbered junctions. If you’re looking for a clearly defined themed route, this offers a different way to explore the story than the exhibitions: it unfolds along a longer cycling route.

Buildings and routes in the town centre

The Sint Jan de Doperkerk is neo-Byzantine in style, with 19 copper domes and a minaret-like bell tower. Four cycling routes lead from there through the surrounding region, heading north, east, south and west; route leaflets are available. This gives you a choice between a set 30-kilometre themed circuit and routes described by the directions they take from the church.

Another architectural highlight is the Huis van Waalwijk, a Rijksmonument in the town centre designed by architect Alexander Kropholler. The building serves as a venue for art, culture and gatherings. Visitors can see exhibitions, take part in workshops and attend events there. For specific dates, it’s worth checking the current programme in advance.

The Rondje Waalwijk-Centrum walk was designed around the Huis van Waalwijk, the Schoenenkwartier and the Sint Jan de Doperkerk. It’s a way to include these three named sites in one walking itinerary. The description focuses on a walk in the town centre and does not specify a walking time.

Nature and excursions nearby

The Westelijke Langstraat nature area lies between Waalwijk and Waspik. It sits where sand gives way to clay, a transition known as the “Naad van Brabant”. The name refers to the change in landscape that defines the character of this area. The Westelijke Langstraat is also home to the Vossenstreken children’s route. A municipal description from May 2025 mentions an app with games and learning content about nature and traditional crafts. Before setting out, check whether the app is currently available.

The Het Hoefsven recreation area lies on the outskirts of Waalwijk and is also colloquially known as ’t Lido. It is a nature and recreation area near the Loonse en Drunense Duinen. If you’d like to use its recreational facilities, check which ones are currently available before you travel.

There are different options to suit different interests: exhibitions on shoe and leather production, architecture in the town centre, a signposted themed route with audio and other routes in several directions. You can use these as a starting point for your stay and decide whether to focus on culture, cycling or an excursion into nature.
