Den Dungen offers several different ways to shape a stay: dike landscapes and routes, a large collection of trees and shrubs, milling history, and a regular market and fair schedule. You can focus on trails and landscapes, on crafts and local history, or on a specific day of the week. Route lengths and event dates are particularly useful when planning.
Routes and the history of water
The historic route through Den Dungen is just under 10 kilometres long and leads over dikes through the surrounding area. The 12-kilometre Dungense Broek Route is a walking and cycling route along the ring dike of Den Dungen. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in course. The walking and cycling guide to the Ringdijk tells the story of Den Dungen and its centuries-long struggle against water. This historical perspective adds context to the dike landscape.
Tree garden, mill and crafts
Bomentuin D’n Hooidonk covers around 7.5 hectares and is home to nearly 1,800 different trees and shrubs. The tree garden offers a distinct focus alongside the dike routes. Guided tours with explanations are available for groups of 10 or more—an opportunity to explore the collection together and learn more about it.
The De Pelikaan windmill in Den Dungen-Maaskantje is a round, stone Dutch windmill dating from 1864; it was rebuilt in 1924. The two dates distinguish its original construction from its rebuilding. At the authentic De Pelikaan mill, visitors can discover the traditional craft of Dungense Molenbakker. Dungense Molenbakker makes bread daily using only natural ingredients and liquid sourdough. It also offers local products such as farmhouse cheese, free-range eggs and fruit juices.
Museum ’t Brabants Leven brings together tools, objects and stories from around 35 old trades. The museum broadens the perspective on craftsmanship: rather than a single mill, it focuses on a collection representing various old trades.
Market, fair and memorial
The market in Den Dungen takes place on Tuesdays from 08:30 to 12:00, giving your weekly itinerary a specific morning event. The annual fair begins on the first Sunday in June and runs through Wednesday. The market and fair provide different time markers: the market is tied to Tuesday mornings, while the fair takes place over a period starting on the first Sunday in June. If either event is important to your trip, you can plan your stay around that day of the week or period.
The Den Dungen war memorial is located by the Church of Sint-Jacobus de Meerdere on Grinsel. It consists of three memorial stones set into the south wall of the Roman Catholic church. Its precise location on the south wall makes the church a clearly identifiable landmark for the memorial and adds a place of remembrance to the local history.
