The Pins Planetenpad leads from Natuurpoort Wouwse Plantage through the estate’s forests, passing eleven panels arranged to scale that feature planets and other celestial bodies. Alongside nature and forests, astronomy, guided walks and cultural heritage are also themes to explore. A cycling route adds another clearly defined distance: 29 kilometres.
Forest Landscape and Nature
The Wouwse Plantage forest covers about 900 hectares and includes various types of woodland. In the Woeste Gedeelte, hills rise to about 20 metres above Amsterdam Ordnance Datum. The forest is also a valuable habitat for birds such as the European honey buzzard and the black woodpecker; their presence is seasonal.
The design of the paths is another feature: Nieuwe Wereld has partially paved paths that make the area easier to visit for people with disabilities. The Wouwse Plantage forests connect with Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide and Landgoed Zoomland near Bergen op Zoom.
Walking from Natuurpoort
Natuurpoort Wouwse Plantage is a starting point for walks through the adjacent Landgoed Wouwse Plantage and its forest. It has a spacious car park with a charging station, as well as an activity area. The walking trails at Natuurpoort start and end there; most can be walked in either direction. This gives you the flexibility to choose your direction on many of the trails.
The Pins Planetenpad adds an astronomical theme to the walking trails. From Natuurpoort, it leads through the estate’s forests, passing eleven information panels about planets and other celestial bodies along the way. Their scale-model arrangement makes the sequence of panels a distinctive feature of this trail.
Another way to explore on foot is to join guided IVN walks on Landgoed Wouwse Plantage. They lead through forests, along fields and through the area known as the “Woeste Gedeelte.” Visitors interested in the landscape and terrain will find a different focus here than on the planet trail: the emphasis is on these landscape features rather than the celestial bodies shown on the information panels.
Routes with Different Highlights
The Plantageroute kort is a 29-kilometre cycling route covering history, heathland and historic estates. The “Wouwse Plantage (Day 1)” route passes Landgoed Boslust and continues through the Wouwse Plantage forest to the town of the same name. When choosing a tour, you can compare the 29-kilometre distance and themes of the Plantageroute kort with the route taken by “Wouwse Plantage (Day 1).” For specific tours, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
History and Culture
Wouwse Plantage began in 1504, when Jan III van Glymes, Lord of Bergen op Zoom, commissioned the planting of a forest for timber production. The year and purpose give the forest’s history a clear historical context: the planting was intended to produce timber.
The Plantage-Centrum includes, among other things, a castle, a hunting lodge and the forester’s house Prinshenhof. The Brandweermuseum displays historic fire engines and firefighting equipment. If you are planning a museum visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance, as they may vary.
